Different pets require different kinds of pet grooming supplies. Some animals are hard to control during the grooming process. There are many different body parts that need to have weekly grooming. Cats and dogs require the most amount of grooming. Spreading out the times where you groom your pet will help decrease any stress.

Whether you are grooming cats, dogs or any other animals you must remember that they all have specific types of supplies needed to groom them properly. When you are shopping for your grooming supplies be sure to be specific about the animal you need groomed as well as its breed.

Many animals are not happy when they get a bath or get their nails cut. Using a muzzle on the pets that are more upset will help protect you and let them know that you are in control. Having control is a key ingredient in successfully grooming your pet. Block all the exits before you begin to groom to avoid the pet getting loose and leaving a trail of soap and water throughout your house.

Showing control is not showing anger. No matter what type of pet you own they have a keen sense on feelings and emotions so stay calm and try not to get upset with your animal. Stroking the outside of the ear on a dog can have some calming effects and still let the dog know that you are in control.

Cats need a thick brush to remove excess dead hair to keep away any possibility of hair balls. Hair balls are not good for their digestive track and will quickly cause discomfort. Dogs need to have a brush that will remove dead hair as well but the style of brush you need depend upon the kind of fur the dog has. If your dog has a lot of long, thick hair you should go for a wide toothed comb but if your dog has short, fine hair a thick bristled brush will suffice.

Pets that are all white are prone to having allergic reactions because your pet lacks those certain elements that give color to their coat. White boxers are known to suffer severe reactions when flea spray is put on them but they react well when flea powder is used instead. When grooming a horse you should use horse specific shampoo as well as a big wide brush. Keeping the coat clean on any animal is a necessity in order to keep them healthy.

You do not have to groom your pet from head to toe all in one day. Many pets despise having their nails cut so feel free to trim a few or even just one and wait until the next day to finish or continue the process.

Also watch out for the quick on the nails of your dog. The quick is a blood pocket at the beginning of the nail and if you cut too close it will start bleeding. Use gauze or a cotton ball to compress and stop the bleeding. You can avoid harming your pet during the grooming process by using the proper pet grooming supplies specific to your pet only.

I want to start my own pet store?

Hi everyone! I have a really good idea for a pet store. Here is what will make it unique:
-Will NOT sell live animals other than fish, mice and rats (snakes gotta eat too!), and some parrots. The mice and rats will be bred by me, mainly as feeders, but not inbred, so they can be bought as pets. And of course I’ll socialize them as babies, I wouldn’t be able to not! Also, the parrots I want to sell are budgies, cockatiels, and perhaps mini macaws. I’m not sure. But they will be bred by me in my home and the cockatiels and other birds will be hand fed by me (not going to sell a ton, just have one or 2 breeding pairs for each type of bird) and the babies will be well socialized.
-I want to set up pet adoption days with the humane society. So they bring in some dogs and/or cats that need homes, and people can come to my store to adopt them! I have seen this at petsmarts and stuff.
-Because I’m not going to have lots of animals (and none from pet mills), I am going to have a directory of breeders in the area for all kinds of animals. That way, people will have an easy resource to find reliable breeders for the pet they want.
-I am also going to have a self-serve dog wash. They are popular to have at car washes, and cheaper than having the dog professionally groomed.
-Also, I will have an agreement with people that do buy the pets I have, if they can not take care of the animal anymore within a year of purchase, I will take the animal back, to help keep pet shelters from overflowing even more.
-I will carry a HUGE selection of supplies and food for all kinds of pets. Reptiles, fish, small pets, dogs, cats, birds, maybe even horses (still pondering that…)
-And many people are worried about their pets safety with toys. I will do my best to provide only safe products for pets.

My second question is, what are some specific brands or products you would like to see in a pet supply store?

Thanks!
I have owned rats, mice, and I am on my 4th bird. And they have all been healthy and well taken care of, so my pets at the store will be also. Plus, I’ll have help with some of the running of the store (mainly from my mom, who would love to work there)
True they can be found in shelters, but, a shelter isn’t likely to adopt out a rat or mouse that is going to be fed to someone’s snake, are they?
Second, many of the parrots in rescues have “emotional baggage” and may have health, temperment, or other problems. Not everyone has the experience (or want) to take those kinds of birds on. Therefore, I will offer a few sweet, socialized, young birds that I breed myself and will only be sent to good homes. Plus, I have the 1 year return policy.

Answer
sounds like a good idea just make sure you take good care of those animals unlike normal petstores! cant stand seeing sick animals in a petstores! good luck and i hope you succed!

Majority of the pet owners have commonly experienced the need to leave their most treasured pets home alone. The reasons may include an out-of-town vacation or business travel. There will always be instances when you cannot take your lovable pets with you. As a result, it is significant for animal lovers to hire the right skillful pet sitter for their pets.

Certainly, it is vital that you feel very much comfortable and confident towards your pet sitter’s skills to take care of your pet. One of the ideal solutions is to ask your friends, neighbors or relatives to provide care for your pet at your absence. Then again, it may not always be feasible for your friend or a family relative to be available to take on the responsibility of taking care of your pet. At this point, you will have to already be open as a pet owner to hiring a dependable and professional pet sitter. This article will offer tips in finding and hiring the pet sitter that you can be comfortable with.

1. First, you have to find a professional pet sitter with a good reputation, which can be an individual or from a company. The best way to finding the right pet sitter is to seek referrals from a person you already know. Consequently, you can be sure that the pet sitter is honest and reliable. It is beneficial for you to inquire from your local veterinarian who is surely able to refer some good and qualified candidates for pet sitters in your area most especially when you are having a hard time finding a pet sitter from your own network.

2. It is best to establish a clear list of duties and responsibilities you will be requiring your pet sitter to do and the schedule s/he is required to before you arrange a meeting with the pet sitter. For instance, you require your pet sitter to visit your pet once per day for about half an hour. Dogs would generally need to have a regular visiting schedule. It may be helpful for you to put together a list of the chores and responsibilities you would require the sitter to accomplish as this can be discussed further during your meeting.

3. All competent pet sitters will surely ask for a ‘meet and greet’ or similarly an initial consultation together with your pet. This is when you and the sitter can talk about the terms and conditions of employment. Moreover, this is also the best time to ask for references from your prospective pet sitter. It is best that you seek for references of his/her previous employers to ensure the honesty and reliability of your sitter. This will also decrease the uncertainties and doubts that you may have towards the new sitter. You have to keep in mind that a trustworthy pet sitter will not at all take an issue if you request for references.

4. It is also important for you to list all the things that you would like to ask your pet sitter before meeting him or her. In addition, it is just wise for you to jot down important information concerning your pet that may include medical problems, personal requirements and veterinarian’s contact details in cases of emergency. As a matter of fact, your pet sitter is sure to ask you to accomplish some documents to detail your preferences.

5. Last but not the least, some pet sitters will request an initial payment during your initial meeting. You have to be sure that you are happy with your decision in hiring the pet sitter before you sign and pay the initial fee. Bear in mind that this person will have the full access to your house on top of managing care for your pet. That is why it is exceptionally important that you have complete trust with them. It is evident to all that leaving an animal for any reason can be a stressful experience for both the owners and pets. Thus, it is important to ease the doubts and anxiety if possible. By finding and hiring the right pet sitter who can be trusted, then you will have that peace of mind and be able to leave your pet in safe hands.

Instead of worrying about the scorching heat and sweat, you can enjoy the sunny days with your pets in a soothing place. They are definitely a part of our family. Taking them in picnic and in outdoor excursion can be fun. But hot summer days can be harmful for them if proper precaution is not taken.

You need to consider this issue. Cats and dogs do not sweat like us. We are blessed with the sweat functioning, but not our pets. It helps us to carry the heat away. Cats and dogs do not have any sweat glands. Instead of sweating they pant. Through panting they dispel heat. But it is not that efficient in controlling heat.

Pet health is really an important issue to all the pet lovers. There are some easy and very effective ways through which you can protect your pets from unbearable heat. You can really make them feel comfortable and happy by applying these strategies. There are some effective pet rescue tips.

1. Water is one of the best things that you can give to your pet to regulate their body temperature. Increase the amount of water for the pets during the summer months. Keep one extra bucket fill of water so that it can be used in time of emergency. Keep the bucket away from sun so that water can remain at room temperature or cool.

2. While making the shelter for your pet, make it sure that it is away from sun and there is enough shade. It is better to select a good shade area for your pet. You can also make a shelter beside your house.

3. Many people prefer to encourage their pets to exercise. It is wise on your part to fix the schedule of exercising in the evening or morning avoiding the hot weather of the day. It will not cause any problem to your pet.

4. It is very important to park your vehicle in a proper place, especially in a shade area. In case you are shopping for groceries, you should make it sure that your pet symptoms is safe inside your car and the car is placed in a shady area. The temperature of the car may increase if it is left under the sun.

5. Not all pets know how to swim. Before you put them in swimming pool you need to make it sure that they know swimming. You can gradually make them learn swimming. You need to rinse them off after they swim.

6. Your pet also needs sunscreen. Smear good quality sunscreen, created especially for pets, on their ears, noses, and other bare skin areas to prevent sunburn.

7. It is better to take your pets to the vets to check whether they are protected against heartworm or not. During the summer months harmful pests like mosquitoes to enough to all of us. You can use mosquito net to protect your pets from these blood sucking mosquitoes.

Does it anger you when people post questions about a pet instead of taking them to the doctor?

It angers me when people post questions about a seriously ill pet with symptoms that they have to know are serious. Why aren’t they calling their vet’s office instead of posting. A good vet will tell you if they need to be seen immediately or can wait. And what you should do in the mean time. I can see posting questions about a condition or something you have already seen the vet for and are just asking further information or for people who have had similar situations. But it angers me that there are so many ignorant pet owners many of whom probably don’t even have a good relationship with a vet or even know basic information about dogs.Every pet owner should educate themselves about their pet including species, etc. That is basic common SENSE.
It’s been great knowing I’m not the only one who feels this way, I was starting to think there were a vast majority of people who didn’t care about their pets!
Thanks all!

Oh and Pale Rider, it became my business when they posted a question about their pet.
I sympathize with the owners who ‘can’t afford’ to treat their pet, but really isn’t it just as true that if you can’t afford to take care of your pet you shouldn’t own one. And there is low cost quality pet insurance a few dollars a month is worthwhile if you know a big vet bill would keep you from taking your ‘best friend’ to the vet. There are also many vets who will offer sliding scale fees to people with low income.

Answer
I agree. If your pet is vomiting blood or has been hit by a car, common sense (and love for the animal) would tell you to bring it to a vet. The not-so-serious symptoms such as “my cat won’t use the litterbox” or “my dog ate a small piece of chocolate” are more appropriate for this page.

But there are a lot of people out there that take in pets, despite the fact that they are not financially ready. Those are probably the people posting questions as well as the younger users.

I feel you, but whatcha gonna do? These people have found themselves as a pet owner some way or another, so we put up with their cluelessness and help out. Afterall, that’s what Answers is for. I’d assume that if enough people answered with “BRING IT TO THE VET” the message may get across and they’ll listen.

Feline obesity is a threat to the health and lifespan of your cat. This article will help you work with your cat to lose the needed weight with minimal struggle.

Feline health is, in many ways, common sense. Since cats are mammals like us, many of the same basic premises apply.

When a cat is overweight, he or she is at risk for heart problems, diabetes, and the exact same complications obese humans experience. Good feline health practices for reducing obesity are the same tactics used for people who need to shed a few excess pounds.

Essentially your cat needs to take in fewer calories and get a little more exercise. That’s all there is to it unless there is some genetic setback causing the feline obesity.

You might think it’s hard to get your cat on a diet and exercise program, but in truth it’s quite easy. Where you lead, your feline friend will follow.

The first step is to ask your vet what your cat’s target weight should be. Your veterinarian should be able to give you a good range to shoot for with a basic physical exam.

Fewer Calories In Your Cat’s Diet

Once you have a target weight goal, you’ll need to start by adjusting your cat’s caloric intake. Your vet can recommend a good food with fewer calories.

Also you can adjust the current feeding schedule. If you’re leaving food in the bowl all day long, start feeding your cat twice a day instead.

Take the bowls up after your cat eats in the morning and set them out again for the evening meal. Again, once the cat has had a good meal, take the food up again until the next morning.

Clearly if you have multiple cats it might not be as easy to manage your obese feline’s diet. If you don’t want to put all cats on a reduced schedule just find a food with fewer calories and eliminate treats until the target weight is reached.

And certainly stop giving your cat people food! Especially in cases of feline obesity it is counterproductive to share people food with your cat.

Feline Exercise Program

Chance are your cat is already somewhat active. Even cats who ‘sleep all day’ have at least one activity period during the day.

Felines are polyphasic, meaning they have multiple periods of sleep and activity during the day. You may simply be unaware of when your cat is running and playing.

Your job is to get your cat involved in a period of exercise and brisk physical activity for about ten minutes each day. And you can do this by simply playing with him or her.

Drag a string, throw a catnip ball, or do something else to intrigue your cat into motion. Keep him/her running, jumping, and swatting for ten minutes or longer without stopping.

You can use catnip to stimulate your cat if needed. Many felines get a rush from this herb and will become more active for several minutes after rolling in or eating it.

It takes a little focus on your part to correct a feline obesity problem. But you owe it to your cat to put forth the effort on this because after all, you are the parental figure in this relationship.

Feline AIDS (FIV)…. Vet waiting for call!?

My cat started losing weight a year or two ago and he was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. He never really gained the weight back and I did worry about his health some but we were doing all we could. He’s been on pills for that. Two days ago, when he got up, he was making weird sounds and attempting to throw up, but without doing so. I called the vet but also thought he was coughing up a furball.

The vet did a blood test and he has feline AIDS, or FIV. He is critical now; it is apparently in an advanced stage. He does look to be in discomfort and very lethargic and such. Can anyone tell me something about this such as… Well, the vet said I could bring him home on pain medication if I wanted. They are waiting for me to call and say what to do. I don’t want the cat to suffer but I also don’t want to euthanize him if he could maybe recover enough to live happy for awhile.

Does anyone have experience with this disease? What should I do? I said I would call within an hour or so. Thanks.

P.S. This cat is the only reason I have to live at all. There is NOTHING else good in my life. The only reason I ever get up at all is because I know he will be around.

Answer
i know exactly what you are going through, my 14 year old car has feline aids too, has had it since he was 3 years old. i have had him since he was 1 hour old, his mom wouldn’t care for him and he was hand raised. when he was 3 he got a fever, lost weight and looked like hell, we live on a farm and he was an indoor/outdoor cat and had sometime gotten into a fight with a male cat with aids. i have 3 other house cats- none have every caught aids from Carlyle. when they diagnosed him, the vet acted like i was an idiot to save him, he was very weak and very skinny. I cooked him chicken breast and feed him broth and chicken, tuna, deli meat- anything that he would eat- even yogurt and icecream, alot of times it was a fight to see who would win- many tiny meals many times a day. don’t give up as long as he tries- my cat also has kidney failure along with his aids, we visit the vet maybe 1 time a year. he is on NO medication, only special food for his kidneys. he eats WHATEVER he wants he is happy and healthy and weighs between 11-13 lbs- at his worst he weighed 6.5 lbs they told me many times i should put in to sleep- what do they know, if he has the will he will pull through it takes you and him working together!! have hope!

With food, gas, education, healthcare, and other costs on the rise many families are trying to save money whenever possible. Pet owners have the added burden of ensuring that pets receive annual vaccinations that protect pets, other animals, and humans having contact with them from contagious diseases (owners are required to have their pets vaccinated against rabies in most states.) In addition to the expense of yearly shots for a pet that can add up quickly, pets with chronic conditions needing medications to manage or treat them, and even routine office visits and monthly flea %26 tick, and heartworm medications for pets can really put a strain on the family budget.

Owners love their pets and often regard them as members of the family, some even refer to pets as their “children.” Perhaps this is how you feel about your pet. You want to help your pet to stay healthy and to live a long time. At the same time, you have to be careful about your spending, and who among us doesn’t need to be thriftier these days with the economy still struggling to recover. Purchasing many of the medications and products needed for maintaining your pet’s health and well-being through reputable online sources can help you save money.

The first tip for purchasing pet meds online and keeping your pet safe is to make sure you are buying the medications your pet really needs. It is not advisable to diagnose conditions your pet may have by the behaviors or symptoms he or she is exhibiting and shopping online for the medications you think will help cure them. Many health conditions in pets share common symptoms and giving your pet inappropriate medications to treat ailments you have misdiagnosed could make them sicker.

You may be able to see fleas crawling on your pet or see flea excrement on a comb you use to brush your pet with or on his bedding, and can purchase flea medications to treat pets for fleas online. Before you do that though you will need to speak with your pet’s veterinarian to learn which medications are recommended for your pet’s specific weight, age, breed, and present health status. Your veterinarian is the best resource for learning what medications your pet may need. This does not mean that you have to buy them directly from your vet as you can often find them cheaper online. Most veterinarians understand pet owners want to reduce the costs of providing medications for their pets and are more concerned with making sure your pet is receiving the best care for their health.

To protect your pet and yourself from fraudulent online suppliers of online medications make it a point to check out a website before making purchases. The company should disclose full contact information and have been operating for more than a year to even be considered as source to purchase your pets meds from. Make sure that you have read and understand companies return policies on purchases of pet meds before making them to protect yourself as well.

Purchase well known brands of pet medications made by companies that you trust. The best online pet medication retailers typically sell the top brands in pet medications, which can help you identify the more reputable online suppliers.

Online pet pharmacies that require a prescription from your vet before allowing you to purchase pet meds offers the greatest protection for you and your pet. Some people do not like the idea of having to get a prescription from their vet for medications for their pets purchased online, and there are some questionable online pet medication sites that are more than willing to allow you to make purchases of pet medications without a prescription.

Always keep the packages and any unused portions of medications that you give to your pet in a bag you can grab and take with you to the vets office should your pet become suddenly sick or injured, so that your veterinarian knows what your pet is taking and can more accurately determine how best to treat your pet.

Monitor your pet for any symptoms of distress after giving them any medications whether they purchased online or from your vet and seek immediate help for your pet if you notice any unusual or concerning symptoms, especially vomiting, difficulty breathing, heavy discharge from the nose, diarrhea, or a pet that is lethargic.

You can save money while providing your pets with the medications they need for vitality and a long life by purchasing pet medications online.

My dog has an eye infection and..?

My dog has eye infection and I called the vet, and he said just get the eye drops for it and he’ll be fine. However, I’m looking for it at Pet Supermarket and Petsmart and can’t find it. I know at 1800petmeds I will, but I needed it as soon as possible. The reason I didn’t get it from the vet, was because he told me that the eye drops is sold out there for much cheaper than his office. Where can I find a good medication other than being online? Help. Thanks! =)
I’ve been told that Neo Poly Dex Ophthalmic is good. But I can’t find it either.

Answer
Our beagles used to get persistent eye infections after being in the field for hours- the vet gave us a tiny tube of triple antibiotic cream (for the eyes.) It usually cleared up the infection within days, and, if I remember correctly, it wasn’t really that expensive.
Neosporin is triple antibiotic, but don’t use it in the eye- get the opthamalic kind specifically for use in the eyes.

The most common cat health problems could have your cat in his or her death bed. As you know, when your feline friend has a problem, you need to get them to a vet as fast as you can. If you want to be considered a good pet owner, you should find the best vet that is recommended for the health problem your cat is having. There are many problems that you can run into when you have a cat and in this article, you will know more about the bad health problems your feline can have.

First of all, you need to get your kitten her shots and spayed or neutered in order to stop some of the problems we will discuss. Cats are very delicate animals and using the best products will ensure they remain healthy. The foods you purchase for them will also play a role in helping them remain healthy for a long time to come.

For those that have no idea about what types of food you need to buy for your cat, you must give them the right type of diet. This will cut down on some of the health problems they will encounter during their older years. Cat owners must also make sure their cats stick to their diet. They must not eat human food because food that have been in the trash or even food that have been out for a few hours will increase their chances of getting parasites.

Your cat’s health has to be your responsibility. This means that you must be informed about the health problems that your cat can get. There are plenty of diseases and parasites that can harm your cat. So it is important to find the right medicine.

What do I mean by medicine? I mean prevention for heartworms. Heartworms eat at the heart which can shorten the life of your cat. Heartworms can be fatal within several years. There are many products you can find that will help fight and protect against heartworms. They can help stop the worms from getting into the heart. The medicine that’s right for your cat is the medicine that is recommended by a reliable veterinarian. The vet can give you the right ideas such as when to adminster the heartworm prevention and how much to give.

If you want to avoid heartworms, you must make sure their diets contain the right foods because there are actually some foods that can give them heartworms. In this situation, prevention may also help. Watch your cat outside and clean out the litter box everyday. Please visit your veterinarian on a regular basis.

Does your cat have a lot of hairballs? If hairballs are a problem for your feline, you should considering changing what food you include in his or her diet. There are many new foods that can assist your cat’s fight against hairballs and reduce the amount of hairballs he or she has to endure.

When you get your feline, you need to get her tick and flea prevention. Parasites such as fleas and ticks can be detrimental to your cat’s health. Ticks can result in many diseases that can hurt the body. Your cat can go through some devastating problems with her health as a result of these ticks.

Another pest problem is having fleas which can cause felines to have bad health as well. The prevention of fleas will be a good idea if you have a cat because fleas can very well kill your feline if you don’t get the condition treated. There isn’t much you can do when your cat is young, but there is some powder you can use that helps cut down on them.

If your cat has a problem with fleas and ticks, then you and your cat must visit a doctor to determine if he or she is still healthy after exposure. Only a reputable type of medication can help your fluffy ball of joy get rid of the fleas and ticks. This information can be gleaned by conversing with a vet. He or she will direct you to an effective brand that can help alleviate this problem.

If you help your cat avoid most health problems, you will have a healthy feline. But you must know about the other health problems that your cat can get. Urinary Tract Infection (UTI) is common among many cats. There are situations where your cat will get a UTI because of the litter that you decided to use.

To avoid problems with a UTI, you need to find the type of litter that helps prevent UTIs. The type of litter that should be used for cats is the type that is safe for them to use. You should know by now that you need to take your furry friend to the vet. The vet will give your pet the right medication to help him or her get through the UTI. UTI occurs often with the males and rarely with the females. UTIs can be the death of your cat if you do not get them looked at.

Another bad health problem that cats can get is feline leukemia. This is the most common cause of cancer and may harm your cat’s immune system. It can cause the death of your furball at home. That’s why it’s important to get your cat the proper vaccines to prevent this problem. The problem with feline leukemia is to make sure that there are no other cats around because it is very contagious and can cause the death of many cats.

The responsibilities you have as a pet owner is to make sure you give your pet the right care. Taking your bundle of joy to the vet can prevent him or her from suffering any prolonged problems with their health. Cat health problems can be handled easily when you get to it before the problem starts. In order to find additional information on how to help your kitten avoid the health problems mentioned in this article, you should check out the Internet for more information that pertains to these health problems. The pet you have at home needs to be in perfect health and needs to be loved by you.

Feline health is all about maintenance. This article will give you three easy steps for keeping your cat(s) happy and healthy on a long-term basis.

Cats are independent creatures in many ways. If you follow a few simple guidelines your feline friends will enjoy maximum health and a very long life.

Use the information below to formulate your own feline health care plan:

Feline Health Tip #1 Choosing The Right Food

It’s critical that you feed your cats a high quality food product. You might save money by going with a dollar store brand of cat food, but the end result will be poor health and possible even complications.

A quality food will ensure optimal feline health by providing the proper nutrition. A good product like Science Diet, Iams, or Eukanuba will boost your cat’s energy levels, give them a healthy, shiny coat, and support a strong digestive system.

Also, a higher-grade food will not contain the kind of fillers and junk found in low-grade stock. Such byproducts can cause digestion problems and sluggish performance over time.

Feline Health Tip #2 Providing A Cat-Friendly Environment

Feline health experts agree that cats living indoors fulltime live longer than cats that are allowed to go outside frequently. Obviously felines will encounter far fewer hazards in your home than they would when wandering the streets or countryside.

However, cats love being outside. So you may want to allow some outdoors time if you live a safe distance from a busy road and there are no free-roaming, aggressive dogs in your area.

Even cats that live inside can endanger themselves through their tendency to investigate unsafe areas. Go over your home as if you planned to childproof it to avoid problems that arise form curious felines.

Keep cleaning chemicals and other toxic materials locked away. Cats might be attracted to the sweet smell of cleaning solutions.

Also be sure any heating/cooling ducts are protected with the proper grates to prevent cats from getting stuck in the ductwork. And avoid leaving easy access to standing water in kitchen sinks or bathtubs.

Feline Health Tip #3 Cat Maintenance

It’s a good idea to pay close attention to your cat’s eyes, mouth, ears, and feet. Look for any liaisons, discharges, or other signs of injury or illness so you can prevent infection or serious complications resulting from their active lifestyle.

And be aware that cats are vulnerable to a whole range of dental, respiratory, and ear/eye complications. By keeping a close watch on any new developments or major behavioral changes you can stop an illness from becoming too serious.

Any changes in eating or drinking habits should be taken seriously. If a cat becomes disinterested in food or water or becomes unable to use the litter box contact your vet without delay.

These three very simple tips can help you keep your cat(s) happy and healthy for a very long time. These wonderful creatures rely on you to keep them healthy and safe, and diligence in this regard is a small price to pay for the companionship they offer.

Was my cat’s tail wound self-inflicted? Could it be feline OCD?

Pepper is an indoor only, 10 year old spayed female with no history of health problems*. Last night, she began SCREAMING and franticly spinning in circles on the staircase with blood splattering everywhere. Another cat was near her but didn’t look as if he attacked her. I rushed Pepper to the emergency. She received stitches and a bandage around her tail. I explained to the vet that there was something very wrong here. I know my cats. I know feline tones better than many cat owners. Pepper’s frantic behavior was not normal even for such an injury. I didn’t know what on earth to think; only that she was not attacked. The vet was insistent on it just being a case of feline “moodiness” and that the teeth puncture wounds verified it was an attack. I was forcing myself to accept that theory despite my instincts until I saw Pepper biting her wrapped tail and growling at it as if it were a threat. I now believe her injury was self-inflicted.

I’ve done research and the two main causes for this behavior are fleas and feline OCD. She has monthly flea medication and no flea dust which rules out the first. That leaves OCD. But my understanding is that OCD is not sudden. Another thing Google came up with was Feline Hyperesthesia Syndrome but she doesn’t exhibit any of the other symptoms. I’m leaning toward this being a mental thing because she only starts attacking her tail once she sees it. She’s look at it for a few seconds and then lunge. If it were fleas or parasites she’d be reaching for it suddenly. It’s the tip of her tail only (base mutilation associated with parasites). She’s not interested in the base or midsection. Please, please help me figure out what’s causing this behavior. Any suggestions are very welcome.

I have a flight Tuesday and am scared to death to leave her. She will be taken care of by her co-owners for the next 3 weeks but they can’t watch her 24/7 like I can. I intent on purchasing one of those cylinders that go around the necks to use when she can’t be supervised. I hate to do that but I don’t want her to mutilate herself again. Nor can I afford anymore $200 vet bills but will gladly pay that and more if Pepper needs it.

*The only health issues she’s ever had was about 5 years ago. She’d eat until the point of vomiting. The vet put her on prescription Science Diet which consists of large chunks which take longer to chew. A month or more on this food cured the problem. She is a healthy weight now and eats fine.
Helpful link on topic…

http://www.fleascontrol.com/cat-biting-tail.htm

Thank you for your answer. I’ve considered that but she acts as if her tail is an threat rather than just an irritation.

Answer
I would get a C collar too like you said while you are gone. One other option is major but may have to happen. That is surgically have the tail taken off if she presists on chewing or mutilating it. I would only do that if she continues to hurt herself though. When I worked for a vet a few years back there was a male cat that came in a few times with similar situation. The owner was getting frustrated and the vet tried different things. The one thing that fixed the cat from doing this was using (soaking the tail once healed from stiches) with bitter apple or bitter lime. You can buy this from most pet stores and its under 10.00 usually and its a decent size bottle. All animals hate the taste and quit biting, nibling on themselves. Also worked on animals that tend to over groom themselves. Try this after the wound has healed, and if not think about other options the vet may recomend.

Given this, it is very important that you know how to make your home ready for your new pet. Here are some tried-and-tested tips to keep in mind.

Give the family a heads up. If you live with other people in the house, it is very important that you ask for their consent before proceeding with the purchase of adoption of your new pet. Find time to brief them. Give them an idea about what to expect. You may also schedule pet care activities such as dog walking, cleaning, grooming, etc. If you have kids, teach the kids how to deal with pets.

Get the yard ready. This is very important especially if you plan to bring dogs into your home. You have to take out plants that can cause harm to your pets. For instance, tulip bulbs, calla lilies, and mushrooms can be poisonous at times. If you have a vegetable garden, fence it to keep the pets from destroying your produce.

Take out all poisonous materials. Pets are like babies. They will play with anything that tickles their curiosity. Put away all cleaning agents that could cause harm to the pets. All chemicals should be safely locked in unreachable cabinets. Some foods should also be kept out of reach. Chocolates, for instance, can be really harmful when consumed beyond moderation.

Keep the house safe. Pets, especially the little ones, are vulnerable to strangulation. So you have to keep all ropes, wires, and electrical cords away at all times.

Secure pet supplies. Pet owners should put nutrition in the priority list to avoid further medication and hospitalization. Aside from the food, you should also purchase leashes, dog collars, and a few identification tags.

Prep yourself for the training. Aside from your pet, you also need to prepare yourself. Training your pet is fun and fulfilling. It is a great bonding time for the pet and the owner. It also allows you to save money that you could have spend on professional pet training sessions.

Pets can bring great joys into our lives. If the budget is tight, you can seek financial assistance by applying for cash converter loans.

Seeking out a Pet Sitter can be a tough task for pet owners. Since you simply can’t leave your pet with just any pet sitter, there are certain things which you must do in order to pick the right one. Here are three tips for finding the right pet sitter:

Review the Pet Sitter’s Qualifications and Experience

You first must review the pet sitter’s qualifications and experience. It is essential to choose a pet sitter who is qualified for the job and has the necessary experience. Ask them what types of pets they have looked after in the past and how long they have been pet sitting for in order to catch a glimpse into their qualifications and prior experience.

Ask About Services

Another tip to keep in mind is to ask about the Pet Sitting services which they offer. Find out exactly what they will do for your beloved pet while you are out of town and what services they do not offer so that you know exactly what their responsibilities will be. Inquire as to whether they perform household duties if you are looking for a well-rounded pet sitter who is also a house sitter.

Provide Contact Info and Provide Information About Your Pet

Lastly, provide the Pet Sitters with your contact information and all of the necessary information about your pet. Let them know what area you live in so that they can tell you if they cater to individuals in that town. Also, let the pet sitter know all of the necessary details about your pet, including any medications your pet may be taking.

These three tips will help you greatly when selecting a new pet sitter.

Why Use a Pet Sitter?

1. Your pets can live in the comfort of their own house where they feel safe and secure.
2. Your pets will receive personal attention from the pet sitter.
3. Your pets can stay on their regular diet.
4. If your pets require a medicine you can be sure that they never miss a dose.
5. You will not have to ask that your friends, relatives or neighbors watch your pet.
6. Your home and pets will be watched at the same time which is an extra-added bonus.

A pet sitter is the perfect answer for your family, especially if you find yourself traveling quite a bit and not wanting to put your animal up in a kennel during the time which you are gone. The right pet sitter will know exactly what your pet needs and provide just that and so much more while you are away. When you find a reputable pet sitter, you can get on to enjoying your time away and know that Fido or Whiskers is in good hands.

Do pet sitters make a reasonable amount of money?

And how much in demand is it

Answer
Try working as an independent contractor to make sure you like it first. Then if you do and you see the demand in your area then start your own business. You must be 18 for some companies to insure you. I drive as far as 10 miles for jobs around my town. I love it and can’t think of a better job for myself.
Google pet sitter and your town / state and see how many companies are in your area.
