The more excellent your cat care regimen is for your cat, the more joy you will get out of pet ownership. When you engage in cat care activities like feeding, petting, or playing with your cat, you are showing your feline friend how much you love them. Seeing your cat at his or her healthiest is its own reward, but there are benefits to cat care beyond just keeping your kitten in top shape. Cat care can improve your quality of life and make every day sweeter.

Succeeding at offering your pet the best possible cat care helps you maintain a positive attitude about your abilities, and can boost your confidence in other arenas. Mastering cat care can be a great first step towards overcoming challenges and difficulties in other areas of your life. Psychological experts agree that caring for a pet is a great way to improve your self esteem. When you see how much your cat care regimen matters to your pet, you will be able to appreciate how much of an impact your actions can have. This helps you feel confident and upbeat about your chances of success at work or school, and in the social sphere.

Cat care can be great for your social life. In addition to the confidence boost that taking excellent care of your feline companion can offer, cat care teaches you to expect and feel comfortable with positive interaction. When you bond with your cat, you are practicing the basic social skills that will help you win friends. Caring for your cat may even help make you more comfortable expressing love and affection, and it will certainly let you feel more confident about your feelings being reciprocated. When you pay careful attention to cat care, you are strengthening your ability to be responsible and trustworthy, qualities that will help you keep friends. Experts recommend pet ownership as a great way to help children learn good social skills, and adults may be able to see substantial social benefits as well.

Many people think that caring for their cat and enjoying their cat are two separate activities. However, the truth is that cat care is largely about showing your cat love and affection. That’s why it is called cat care: because it is how you show that you care about your cat. Cat care can be a satisfying part of your day every day because it lets you see that you’ve had an effect. When you groom your cat or clean its litter box, you will see a visible difference result immediately from your actions. When you spend a few minutes curled up with your cat on the couch, you will be able to notice a distinct attitude change in both your cat and yourself as you both bask in the calm glow of shared affection. Cat care can make your life richer and fuller on a daily basis.

anyone know a good website to find out about cat care?

my friend is thinking of getting a cat and really she does not know anything about them! (no offense) she needs everything… health, care, nutrition… the whole deal. anyone know a good website?

Answer
There are lots of good sites. I have posted a link on bringing a new kitten/cat into your home, and from it are many links to related articles.

On the article on bringing a new kitten into the house, I would skip the suggestion of a cat bed, and forget about Feliway.

The second and third links pertain to food and feeding, written by the Cornell Vet school. They do not suggest a specific brand, but indicate what to look for in food.

If you have recently found out that your beloved dog has cancer, you are currently facing an array of decisions. If you are seeing a veterinarian, he or she has likely recommended dog cancer treatment options like surgery, chemotherapy and radiation. Unfortunately, the sad fact is that these kinds of treatment can be harmful for your dog. However, homeopathic medicine is an option that you might not have thought of yet. This type of medicine is a completely safe way to treat both humans as well as animals.

With homeopathy, your dog will be administered very diluted amounts of various substances. The quantity of these substances is so diluted that the treatments are completely safe. However, at the same time, these remedies are extremely potent. In one study, scientists used test tubes and were able to get cancer cells to ‘commit suicide’ by using homeopathic remedies.

When you use homeopathic remedies as a dog cancer treatment, not only will he or she experience an improved quality of life, your pet will also live longer. Many pet owners are finding that alternative medicine options like homeopathy and biofeedback are helping their pets fight the disease without the need for harmful procedures. These types of homeopathic treatments are also completely safe. They have no side effects and have no addictive properties either. In fact, even babies can be safely treated with homeopathic medicine. A total lifestyle change that includes detoxification, better nutrition and remedies like homeopathy and flower essences can have a huge impact on the health of your pet.

Homeopathy treats your dog’s body as a whole. Sadly, since surgeries and dog cancer treatment like chemotherapy only focus on removing the cancer, they can cause a host of side effects. Further when your dog is in a weakened state and feeling sick and depressed due to various treatments, his cancer is more likely to spread. Your dog may have gotten cancer in the first place because his immune system was weak. Unfortunately, these invasive treatments might end up making your dog even weaker and more vulnerable to the disease. As a result, it could be increasingly difficult for his body to combat the dog cancer.

Western medicine’s approach to dog cancer treatment can often provide a temporary fix for issues. However, alternative treatments like homeopathic medicine can not only greatly expand a dog’s lifespan, but also can bring him back to a normal state of health. Homeopathy is a safe way to reverse the progression of cancer in your dog’s body.

Homeopathic remedies stimulate a dog’s immune system. They also strengthen the body’s ability to fight disease. One of the most powerful effects that this type of medicine has is that it can take advantage of the body’s own healing power. Your dog’s body’s natural ability to heal is the ultimate dog cancer treatment.

The more fully you educate yourself about the ins and outs of cat care, the more able you will be to create an ideal care regimen for your pet. The better your cat care, the longer your cat will live, and the higher the quality of life it will have. In case that isn’t reason enough for you to invest a bit of time and energy in learning to offer your feline pet the best possible cat care, here is a quick breakdown of a few of the many benefits to outstanding cat care.

Great cat care means that when your cat needs medical treatment, you will recognize the signs early, possibly even long before invasive or costly procedures or drugs are necessary. Conscientious cat care will help you notice any health problems as soon as they manifest in even minor symptoms. This can help you catch issues early, when they are at their most easily treatable. By providing great cat care, you are helping to stop diseases and other health problems in their tracks by getting your cat the medical attention he or she needs as early as possible.

Regular, excellent cat care means that you will be able to be more efficient and save time in your cat care regimen. If you take a bit of time each day to complete a few simple cat care tasks, you will be sure that nothing builds up until it gets out of hand. In fact, you can spend less time overall by making efficient cat care a part of every day. Habitual and thorough cat care can actually be less work than taking care of a cat who you have ignored even a little bit. After all, grooming a slightly scruffy cat once every week is easier overall than grooming an utterly filthy cat once a month.

When you fully understand the different aspects of cat care, you can be sure that you aren’t neglecting any part of the cat care equation. Cat care is a multifaceted process that includes everything from stern training to playful snuggling, and an inexperienced or uneducated cat owner may not be aware of all of these different sides to having a cat. When a cat doesn’t have all of its needs fulfilled, it can develop behavior or health problems that could have been avoided through simple, responsible care on the part of the owner.

Last but not least, one great reason to improve your cat care is simply that there is no good reason not to. Learning how to care for your cat more fully and completely is easy, so you might as well give it a try. Even if you think that you already know everything under the sun about cat care, it never hurts to double check. Take some time to skim a book or a few websites on the subject, and you just may discover your own reasons to improve the way you care for your pet.

How to care for a cat?

Is it safe to get a kitten or cat from a shelter? It’s going to be my first pet. What would i need to care for it.
Is it mandatory to get the shots for the kitten and how much do they cost?

Answer
Hello!

I am so glad that you wanted a cat/kitten as your first pet! First of all, it is perfectly fine and safe to adopt a shelter cat. This is actually the first place that you should head to when you want a pet cat. When you adopt, you are rescuing a homeless cat and giving her a forever home. And the cats in shelters are needs love from someone like yourself.

Petstores are never the place to BUY a companion animal. Stores are motivated by GREED and FINANCIAL GAINS and most animals are not very well cared for. All they wanted is to see the animal as fast as they could and they give very less thought about the well being of the animals.

When you adopt from a shelter, your cat will receive a thorough health screen, the first set of all needed immunizations and some shelter will make it mandatory to spay/neuter your cat before having it released to you.

Vet care can be expensive if you choose a kitten before they need regular vet check ups, so if financial ability is a concern to you, adopt an adult cat. It’s easier to care for and commands less of your time but will give you just as much joy and happiness.

Oh, there are quite a bit of things that you will need for your new cat so I am just going to leave you with some helpful links to sites that can very much help you.

Do you know the difference in Pet Insurance Policies? If not, your Pet can be at risk of beeing underinsured. The costs of pet ownership and veterinary treatment fees have increased dramatically over the last few years.

This has come about due to the amount of research and development put into animal surgery, and many conditions that would have been fatal or untreatable even just a few years ago can be successfully treated today. In fact, advances in animal surgery are being made every day, but along with that comes an associated cost.

In a way, owners might feel that it is a bit unfair that they should have to choose between decimating their bank account and saving the life, or at the quality of life, of their beautiful and much-loved pet. It can be a difficult choice, whether to remortgage or let your pet die, and that’s where the price of pet insurance is not high in comparison to its importance.

You have a range of cover options, from specified cash limits to comprehensive treatment, and here are some of the options that pet insurance can offer apart from the cost of surgical procedures:

1. Holiday cover: if you take your pet on holiday, this will cover you for veterinary costs abroad.

2. Holiday cancellation: you can get cover to pay your costs should you have to return home from vacation due to the illness of a pet.

3. Missing Pet cover: This covers you for any expenses or rewards offered for the return of a lost or missing pet and any kenneling or boarding fees accrued until you claim it.

4. Life Insurance: pet insurance is just like your own life insurance. You get paid a benefit, or the market value, of your pet if it dies due to certain illnesses or by accident. What is your market value? (Ask your wife!)

5. Third Party Indemnity: This covers you if any pet for which you are legally responsible causes damage to persons or property – not applicable to cats, regarded in law as ‘free spirits’.

You should never underestimate the importance of pet insurance, but you must also make sure that you are fully aware of the extent of the cover. Some might include cover for special diets your pet must have until it recovers, or for overnight stay in a kennel or cattery while its condition is being monitored. Cosmetic treatments are generally not covered unless you have a special clause including that.

Other factors that may be involved in insuring a pet include the excess you pay first, or any previous health problems that you must declare – pet insurance is no different to your own health or life insurance in this respect.

Age is also important and if you grossly underestimate your pet’s age, your insurance might be annulled and any claim refused. You are advised to ask your veterinary surgeon to provide you with a written professional estimate of age if you don’t know when your animal was born.

Never take the importance of pet insurance lightly, because even though you regard it as an insignificance now, that will all change when you are informed that your pet has a serious illness that will be terminal unless it has expensive diagnostics and treatment.

Is pet insurance a good idea? Are there any personal stories anyone can share?

There was a story about Pet Insurance on the radio this morning, and I’m considering it for the first time. I know next to nothing about it, though.

Does anyone here have it? Is there any particular company which stands out from the others on the market currently?

Thank you for any info you can share!
Ouch. Well, that’s already a negative. I don’t consider it much of an “insurance policy” if I have to pay the bills up front.

How about regular maintenance visits? You know, check-ups and shots?

Answer
I have insurance for my dog and I am happy with it. I am a recent college grad so wouldn’t have much funds to put toward her if something huge were to happen.

It’s a pretty big deal, if you’re shopping for pet insurance, because there are so many options out there and lots of companies that have fine print (like excluding breeds or conditions of certain breeds like one person said) or benefits schedules which means they only pay up to a certaing amount for specific conditions/procedures.

I chose Trupanion for my dog after lots of research. They don’t exclude breeds or breed-specific conditions, and don’t have benefits schedules so they cover 90% of the actual bill. They also don’t have limits on amount per claim, amount per year, or claims per year, just a total lifetime limit.

Yeah it’s unfortunate that you have to be reimbursed, but that means that you can choose any veterinarian and don’t have to worry about whether your vet “accepts” the insurance or not.

Also about regular check-ups, some companies cover those, but they charge you the same amount you would pay anyway (plus a little more to make it worth it to them to offer the coverage) so it’s not worth it to you.

Of course some people will pay monthly premiums for years without needing a trip to the vet while others will rack up a $4,000 bill right away. But that’s what insurance is, isn’t it? To pay for unexpected things that you can’t afford yourself. I personally think it’s a good idea, especially on younger pets who are more likely to get into trouble and have more years ahead of them to get into trouble.

Dog health question: Anyone had a pet with similar symptoms?

First: I’ve already taken him to the vet twice, and have now been referred to a specialist, who I’ll be seeing tomorrow.

He’s a 60+ pound beagle/blue tick coon hound mix, neutered with all of his shots.

His first episode was in late October. He began swallowing or gulping repeatedly and loudly, and had slight muscle tremors. I do not know if this happened after a lot of exercise, but we had recently gotten a new dog and they were playing in the backyard. On this day there were also a lot of wasps out (which he’s never learned not to bite at despite being stung before, no adverse effects), a few sticks they’d pulled out from beneath the deck, and since she’d had some fleas, he had recently been given a round of a permethrin-based spot on flea medication.

His voice changed over the winter and his whines/growls became very strained and high pitched, though he could still bark normally. In January he had another episode following some intense running around. More swallowing repeatedly, but no muscle tremors. He was pacing urgently and desperate to go outside and eat grass. When he was inside, he tried to eat a cloth comforter tag. He eventually threw up bile. He would also stand there drooling, something he never does, and he was hungry but didn’t want to eat his hard food until I’d moistened it.

His third episode was last Friday, again after some intensive activity. Started with swallowing again, then pacing and desperation to go outside. He was staring at his food, so I gave him some wet food, but he eventually threw up food and bile. He normally doesn’t snore but he did that night.

He also has clear nasal discharge and his gums are usually somewhat pale, though right now they look pink. When the vet checks his throat right under his ears, he starts coughing.

He’s had x-rays taken of his throat and chest, nothing abnormal. He’s going to get an endoscopy tomorrow.
Also: his appetite and thirst are fine. He eats and drinks well and has no problem with hard food when he is not having an episode. At least, if it hurts him, he shows no indication of it. He’s gained five pounds between January and March.
Oh yeah. When he’s not having an episode, which usually lasts for about a day, he seems perfectly fine and happy.
He’s three years old. He had muscle tremors the first time but not since and shows no signs of lethargy or anything. Even in the midst of an episode, he’s alert and energetic.

I have no idea what kind of x-ray they did beyond what areas were done.
He’s been on a different food for a month.

Little curious how it could possibly be an allergy when the only thing that sets it off is exhaustive activity of some kind, and in all three cases he had something very exciting going on.

First time was after new puppy, second after first time to the park in a while due to winter weather, third time was after company was over.

His heart and lungs were fine on x-ray, he has no exercise intolerance, and he’s as energetic and alert as ever.

Also, his voice has since changed back to normal, and the third episode was not as bad as the second, which was not as bad as the first.

Is it at all possible the permethrin is still stored in his body and when he’s super excited/energetic, it’s released and he has another reaction to it?

Permethrin toxicity includes his symptoms, but it seriously has been months since the one time I used it. I disposed of it away after his first episode so he hasn’t gotten into it since.

Answer
What are you feeding him? Poor quality dogfood weakens a dog’s system to the point anything can jump on them and make them sick. How long have you had him? How old is he? Do you know enough about his ancestry to be sure spot on flea preventative would not be harmful to him? If not, I would NOT put any more on him.

I’ve said it many times, but I’ll say it again: Poor nutrition combined with pesticides that are either ingested or applied to dog can make them very, very ill. It is hard on their organs, and it can be fatal. Holistic vets are trained in both traditional (crisis) veterinary medicine, as well as nutrition oriented treatments, and that’s why I recommend them.

Pet health care is becoming a multibillion dollar industry. That’s right, INDUSTRY. It’s a BUSINESS, because as much as we love our dogs, cats, horses and gerbils, the fact is, they are animals. And if the HMOs who let thousands of PEOPLE languish without proper treatment are not obliged to be ethical, why should a vet? I’ve seen big changes in the way animals are cared for in the nearly 50 years I’ve been dealing with veterinarians, and sad to say the changes are not good. Better techniques, medicines and treatments, and technology to determine exact nutritional needs do not replace the heart when it comes to caring for the body, whether it’s human or animal, but that’s what’s happened, and we need both.

Hope the website below can help you out, but if it were my dog, I’d take him to a holistic vet, change his diet the highest quality available, and get rid of the pesticides.

Edit: I came back to call “dizzyg” for giving me a TD (and you did). This person apparently has a problem with admitting that nutrition is not emphasized in vet training, that traditional medicine is geared toward “fixing” things, rather than preventing them, or there are a LOT of unethical vets around these days. I’ve run into a LOT of people who feel the same way, and I’ve run into plenty of vets (young ones) that are in it for the money.

BTW, *I* have myasthenia gravis, and I was diagnosed by a doctor I was assigned to go to for a workers comp case. When I went to my HMO md, he couldn’t tell if I had it or not. Hmm. I kept having symptoms, so I started doing research on how to help myself nutritionally. Turns out I needed something my ex FIL recommended to me years ago. What was it? Lecithin, manganese (not magnesium) and vitamin A. I started taking the amounts recommended (high but safe dose on the A) and guess what? My symptoms do not bother me unless I fail to take my MG vits. Laugh if you want, but if that’s what the dog has, this is what will help.

This is by NO means ALL of the ways I’ve seen benefits in myself, my family members and my animals from lowering or eliminating exposure to pesticides and improving nutrition. There isn’t space on here to do that. But, believe what you want, it’s still a free country (or, it’s supposed to be).

Edit: Nerve damage can be long lasting. It takes them a long time to regenerate. Here’s a link to the “drooling” symptom on the website I first posted. I thought it was rather interesting. Just because most dogs are not affected by the ingredients in the “safer” flea preventatives, does not mean your dog isn’t. http://www.web-dvm.net/organophosphatetoxicity.html

It is quite ironic that a lot of people are under the impression that pet homeopathic remedies are not safe for their pets. Since most of the ingredients in these natural remedies are completely organic, the chances of allergic reactions or other such side effects are lower.

Some people think it is not as effective as conventional medications. Some people think it is not safe and are worried about the side effects. Some people think it is too pricey. Some people, not surprisingly, have not heard of natural care for pets at all.

Pet Homeopathic Remedies

The difference between pharmaceutical drugs and homeopathic remedies is that the drugs treat the symptoms and homeopathy treats the cause of the symptoms.

Pet homeopathic remedies are now being recognized as some of the most effective treatments you can provide your pets. They are even more effective than those expensive treatments that are on the shelves of your local pet supply store or in your vet’s office in many cases.

These natural pet remedies are based on elements that are found in nature, which have historically been used to treat many ailments and illnesses. In fact, you very well may have these natural remedies right in your own kitchen at this very moment.

Benefits Of Homeopathy For Pets

Homeopathy is based on the principle of ‘like treats like’ What this means is that a substance that cause symptoms of incontinence in your pet can actually be used to heal the problem when administered in minute doses. Homeopathic remedies can help pets with physical, mental, and emotional conditions :

1- Your pet will live longer,
2- Improved quality of life,
3- You will be treating the source of disease,
4- Your pet will heal faster,
5 – You will be building your pet’s immunity system,
6 – You will see a decline in chronic diseases,
7- You will save money.

When compared to the cost of traditional medicine and prescription drugs, pet homeopathic remedies are unbelievably less expensive. This is most likely due to the fact that they are not patented and marketed like traditional prescription drugs which increases the cost for the end user.

Conclusion

Use common sense and strike a balance between when you should use herbal treatments for pets at home and when you should go to the vet. A holistic approach to your pet’s well-being will bring health and happiness to your four legged friends. I do not argue that herbal medicine for pets can treat all health conditions. More severe conditions and illnesses need veterinary treatment. Always make sure that you tell your vet about any supplements or herbal treatments that your pet is taking.

Diagnosis

The first thing that a vet will do when he thinks that a dog might have hip dysplasia is reading the medical history of the dog, after which he will examine the dog in detail. After the physical examination, the veterinarian will look at the joints of the dog to see if there are any signs that their motion is limited or reduced, if the joints are lax or if they creak, or if the muscles of the thighs are atrophied. The results, together with the symptoms that were mentioned above will tell the doctor if the dog suffers from hip dysplasia. You need to mention those symptoms that you observed when the doctor asks you about them, so he can form a full image of the dog’s condition. He will watch the dog as he moves or walks around, and check if he can lie down or sit properly. Sometime, he will be able to diagnose the dog as having hip dysplasia just by doing.

Diagnosing hip dysplasia requires taking x-rays in most cases, and they’re a tool that is very important to the diagnosis. Using them allows the doctor to find the disease both in cases when symptoms are present and when they are not (sometimes it happens). Taking an x-ray needs the dog to keep still, without moving, which means that the vet will probably need to give him some anesthetic. After this is done, he will be able to use the x-rays results to find out if the dog has hip dysplasia. The doctor can also use the x-rays to find out how much of a problem the hip dysplasia is and at what stage it is. This will determine what course of treatment the dog needs to take, and how it should be implemented. The treatment will improve the dog’s quality of life and take away some of the pain.

Causes

Hip dysplasia in dogs is usually caused by his genetic heritage. Studies have revealed that genetics play a great part in the appearance of hip dysplasia. What that means is that the medical history of the parents plays an important part in determining if hip dysplasia will show up or not. That’s why there are breeds that have an increased chance of getting hip dysplasia. In most cases, the breeds with a big chance of getting hip dysplasia are the big ones, like German Shepherds, St. Bernards, Labrador Retrievers, Rottweilers, Golden Retrievers and Neapolitan Mastiffs.

However, genetics isn’t the only reason why dogs can develop hip dysplasia. Other reasons why hip dysplasia shows up include environmental factors. These can influence the appearance of the disease. One factor that can influence hip dysplasia is the nutrition of the dog. What I mean by nutrition is the fact that dogs that become overweight are more likely to get this disease, since the added weight makes the joints more stressed. The second factor can be the type of physical activity, as jumping and climbing stairs can also add extra stress on the joints of the dog, when done too much. If the dog does this type of physical activity on a regular basis, it can add to the chance of developing arthritis.

The third factor that can contribute to hip dysplasia is a slippery bedding or flooring. If they puppy stays on wood or newspaper floors, they have an increased chance of getting hip dysplasia. A surface that is slippery will not make the dog get hip dysplasia, but it can worsen the situation. Even though hip dysplasia is caused by genetics, other factors can influence how the disease is expressed or how it develops.

My dog died, and I want a diagnosis.?

So, my dog died a month ago.

let me start by saying this dog was 9 years of age, and up until death (quite literally, she died in my hands I would know) her energy level was phenomenal. (she’s a lab, pure bred btw)

When I first started noticing something was wrong, I figured it was just a sign of old age. she’d calmed down a considerable bit, and become almost tranquil. VERY unlike my dog. So I shrugged it off for a day or two.

Then our power went out, and for 2 days we where without electricity, and it was cold as hell. Of course the pets probably got it worse, so that’s why I wasn’t really suprised to see my dog drinking a LOT more than usual. The power came back on, woohoo, yet my dog continued to drink like a fiend.

well, this same day (my parents decided to stay at a hotel, while I stayed home) before I went to sleep, I notice my dog has it’s tail tucked under, head bowed, and breathing pretty heavy, whilst laying in it’s bed. The I gave her water, didn’t come. Brought the dish to her, drank a good 75% right there. So I tried to see what was wrong.

She could hardely walk.
The next day I noticed blood around her. That’s when i knew for sure she was seeing her last days. There was pock marks on her back, where I suppose the blood came from, but paying attention to her breathing, which was laboured, led me to believe some had come from her mouth (also the blood I saw was in drops) at the back of her bed area there was some more blood which looked moreso to have come from her back, as it wasn’t in a drop like pattern.

that day (early) she’d attempted walking, and barely could stand……

That night (late) she had worsened. her breathing had gotten worse…..and there where more blood stains….
Her breath, i noted, smelled awful, not like a dogs bad breath, but a kind of rotted smell.

My mother wanted her to the vet’s ASAP, so me and a friend who was over did the best we could to get her up the stairs (my dog loved that haha). I guess I should note that she loves cars too…what killed her was when we loaded her into the car…she tried to stand…jump, fell backwards….and being the only one in the car, I did the best I could…but she stopped breathing.

So….from that story (if you could read through it) can someone please explain to me what afflicted my dog, so that I can finally put it to rest in my mind….even if the thought of a living thing dying in my hands still creeps the living SHIT out of me till this day, at least I’ll know what caused this….
thanks to all of you that have posted.

I’m not quite sure who would have poisoned my dog, but I’d say from reading articals you guys gave me, since we work with cars a lot, that might have been accidental…….

As for why we didnt take her to the vets, it happened over the course of 2 days! 1 of which both us, and the vets, had been without power for a number of days.

The lethargy I thought was ageing (her first sign of illness) had happened gradually over a period of about a year.

in other words, it was impossible to. by the time the 2nd day rolled around, and we HAD power, it was sunday, and the vets where closed…

*sigh*

Thank you much to all who posted. you helped more than you think haha.

Answer
I’d also go with poisoning (the bad breath makes me think acute kidney failure), but only your vet could tell you for sure.

This is an example of why it is so important to contact your vet when your dog starts to show behaviors that are markedly different from their normal.

Looking after lizards and the reptile supplies that you might require

Like any pet, a lizard needs to be provided with a suitable type of environment to ensure that it has a healthy and happy life. It might seem daunting at first when you consider how many reptile supplies you’ll have to buy to give your lizard a comfortable home. Plenty of research can be conducted beforehand so you are familiar with some of the sundries that you’ll need to buy. Expert help is also available to ensure you buy all of the correct items that will help to care for your new pet.

The reptile supplies that make up the ideal starter kit

Yes it is possible to buy starter kits prior to buying a lizard and they contain everything you’ll need to create the perfect type of environment for the new addition to your dwelling. Within a decent starter kit you should find a number of reptile supplies including the vivarium, or glass tank that will form the main accommodation for the reptile. Heating will be needed inside the vivarium and a light source will also be required. More often than not you’ll also be supplied with moss, bark and other material that can be used in conjunction with other to create a cosy setting for the reptile.

Food for your lizard and where to buy essential reptile supplies

It’s essential that you give your lizard the correct diet and food can be purchased direct through suppliers who stock a range of reptile supplies. Make enquiries with them about the best types of feed to give to your pet and this way you’ll ensure a good quality mix of food is provided at all times. Most stockists have a great range of canned, dried and live food available and if you are uncertain about the best type of feed to give to your reptile, speak to the supplier who can assist you at every step of the way. It can be fun and rewarding to keep reptiles at home and with suitable reptile supplies your new pet will enjoy a good quality of life.

What supplies may be needed to start a good reptile rescue. I need to know cheap equipment and good advice.?

I mainly want to rescue snakes like Ball Pythons,Red tailed boa’s, Burmese pythons, Pastel Pythons, Rock Pythons, Corn snakes, Milk snakes, and King snakes. i mainly want to work with snakes but i will also work with lizards like Bearded Dragons, Green and Bahama Anoles, Colombian anoles, Leopard Gecko’s, Crested Gecko’s, Six Lined Race Runners, and many other reptiles I also have a good vet i talked to and help with local herpetology societies but i would like a wide verity of choices to chose from.

Answer
A rescue is very hard to do. Especially for reptiles. You would need some nets maybe and small and large tanks for them. If I may ask what are you planning to rescue? (turtles, lizards, ext.) And some good advice would be to be aware of snakes and turtles because they will hurt if you were to be bit. Lizards might give you a scare if they bite but most only have insect teeth and don’t hurt at all. And you will probrobly need many more than 1 person other than you because reptiles can be very fast.
Hope this helps!

More and more pet owners are wondering about feline health supplements. Are they really necessary and if so, how do they help maintain health and fight disease? Which ingredients should you look for in a good supplement? Read this article and you will get answers to your questions.

First let me share two stories about two different cats:

When I first bought supplements for my cat five years ago, some of my friends thought I was crazy. At the time, my cat was fighting cancer and I wanted to do everything in my power to help her beat this disease. Fortunately, with supplements and radiation treatment she did get better and lived out the rest of her years in good health, especially for a cat that was seventeen years old. It made me feel good that she was able to live the last years of her life without suffering or pain.

Today, I give the same feline health supplements to my new cat, not because she’s sick, but to maintain her good health. What’s ironic about all this is that those same people who were horrified that I was spending money buying vitamins for my cat are now doing the same for their pets.

Like us, cats are exposed to pollution and chemicals in the environment that can compromise their immune system, leaving them open to infection and disease. Add to this the fact that food is just not as healthy as it used to be and you can see the value of pet supplements. Although cats don’t live as long as we do, like us, they deserve to have good quality of life.

So now your next question is probably if I buy supplements for my cat, what will they do? The best supplements help build immunity by fighting free radicals and soothing away inflammation, two culprits that are believed to be the cause of most disease. In addition, the supplement will help the body dispose of toxins that are stored in the organs and tissues and build up over time.

Of course, there are many supplements on the market, but some are definitely better than others. So how do pick a good one? Over the years, I’ve used the following checklist:

1. Look for a manufacturer that has been in business for at least five years.
2. Make sure the manufacturer believes in their product enough to offer a money back guarantee.
3. Look for proven ingredients like Astragalus, Cat’s Claw, Mistletoe and Milk Thistle. These ingredients detoxify the liver, fortify the immune system, normalize blood pressure, soothe away inflammation and destroy free radicals.

Although it may seem odd at first to give vitamins to your pet, know that these are the same ingredients that your pet would look for if it were free to roam the wild outdoors and chew on medicinal plants. In fact, these ingredients make for the most effective feline health supplements available today. Best of all, they are not expensive.

In addition to giving your cat supplements, it is also a good idea to feed your cat healthy food that is made from real meat or fish, vegetables and whole grains. Stay away from processed cat food that contains meat byproducts, fillers and chemicals. This is junk food for pets.

Always make sure that your cat is well-hydrated by making sure its bowl is full of fresh clean water. To filter out the chemicals in city water, use a tap filter.

Giving your cat healthy food, clean water and daily supplements are the best way to fight off disease and ensure that your cat lives a long, healthy and happy life.

cat health question regarding feline worms?

I think my young cat may have worms. he is not vomiting or losing Weight. He seems normal. However, we have noticed in his feces, little white grains (rice looking particles). They are not live or moving it just looks like he ingested rice. Are these some type of worm???
He is an indoor cat. We adopted him about 7 months ago from an ad in the paper. and they said he was healthy. We saw the mama kitty and siblings all appeared healthy. He does get into the garbage at times before we catch him, how did he get them if it is worms??
OMG lefty ty, he did in fact catch a field mouse a few months back and kinda did what cats do to it……
very detailed ty mad s

Answer
These are very likely tapeworms These are the casings from the worm.

A cat can get these from infected feces, eating bugs or rodents or fleas. If the cat goes outside, it is almost a given.

very easily treated by your vet with either an injection or powder to add to the food.

See your vet.

Tapeworms are flat worms that are segmented. They consist of a head, neck, and then a number of segments. The head usually has suckers or muscular grooves that enable the tapeworm to attach itself to the animal’s intestine.

Each tapeworm segment has its own reproductive organs. New segments are continually formed in the neck region of the worm while those at the end of the tapeworm are cast off as they mature. These mature segments contain large numbers of eggs which are often grouped into packets. The segments may often be seen near the anus of the cat or dog. These segments may move if recently passed, or if dried, they look like grains of uncooked rice or cucumber seeds.

Tapeworm infections are usually diagnosed by finding these segments on the animal as you did.

Even an indoor cat can get worms from dirt tracked in on shoes, eating insects or rodents, or exposure at birth. Some worms are hard to detect as kittens, and unless tested at an annual check up may go unnoticed.

On a related note, I cannot suggest the ‘self’ wormers available over the counter. Maybe as a follow up treatment, but NOT for a kitten and not for the first time treatment.

Feline Diabetes, any relationship to the recent pet food recall?

Our 13 yr cat was experiencing most of the symptoms described for the pet food recall. A Vet visit showed an infection which was treated with an injection, but the vet says that wasn’t the cause of the symptoms. The vet ran some blood work and came back with Feline Diebetes. Now we stick the poor guy once a day with a needle to control his glucose levels.
From what I’ve read, the tainted recalled food effects the kidneys.
In regards to glucose levels, would the test results of a cat that ate the tainted food be the same for a diabetic cat?

Answer
I believe that feline diabetes is related to a high amount of carbohydrate in the cat diet. There is a Yahoo group for felinediabetes. Put in: http://www.yahoogroups.com and join that group. The members will be very up to date on the food issues and also be able to answer many of your questions about dealing with that disease.
