Giving a pet anxiety medication?

I work at a vet clinic, and a lot of people come in asking for an anti-anxiety medication, or a sedative for their dog that has separation anxiety, is very fearful, or has some other kind of behavioral issue. I personally would rather try working with this dog’s behavior through training and other techniques before I tried using medication. How do you feel about it? I am just wondering.

I think it’s the same as with human anxiety – you use drugs to assist the problem, not fix it. Sometimes, like people, animals can get so worked up that training isn’t going to get through to them – you use the drugs to calm them initially, so you can use behavioural therapy, and then stop the drugs when you think they’re ready.

People come into our clinic a lot around fireworks time for sedatives, and I fear they are just feeding their dogs the drugs without trying to fix the underlying problem. Often tho it’s because they don’t realise there are ways to fix it – but that’s why we’re there, to educate them!

allot of female birds don’t talk but smaller birds are less likely to talk such as parakeets but they still do talk on some occasions but having a bird is not all about teaching them to talk its about giving them a home and a life

well all birds are loud but many smaller birds seem to be a little quieter then larger ones

you sound like you’ve never owned a bird so i would recommend a parakeet or budgie they love to be out of their cage they aren’t hard to teach and get along well with strangers but if u get a parakeet you want to get 2 of them because they are a flock bird and love to be with a friend so they aren’t so bored or stressed

5. Do they need to have time to be allowed to fly around the house, or is this too dangerous?

it is dangerous and i don’t allow it in my house but if u fell that is what u want then only allow them 1 room and post many perches in various places and if u do decide to let them roam take it slowly first bring them home and put them in there cage and sit by it and talk to them for a while then start leaving the door open allowing them access to the room and don’t allow any other pets to be in the room

you buy or adopt it and bring it home? I see HUNDREDS of questions from people who want to know how to care for a pet AFTER they have purchased it or adopted it. Then they realize they bit off more than they wanted to chew and the animal usually suffers. What kind of LOVE is this? If you love to be around animals but don’t want the full time responsibility of one, PLEASE find a way to volunteer at an animal shelter or animal rescue group. Or you can offer to walk an elderly person’s dog or babysit a friend’s pet..or birdwatch or observe other wildlife.

Will this medication work for my rats’ mites?

I’ve read that one can use horse worming paste to get rid of mites in my rats. I think you’re supposed to give an amount the size of a grain of rice to each rat, once every week for three weeks. Also, the concentration is supposed to be 1.87%. Heres a website that I got that information from:

yes it will work.i have used ivermectin with my boys before. the mites cleared out.

a good way to reduce risk of mites in he first place though, is to take whatever bedding you are using (i hope its not cedar or pine btw) is to stick the bag in your freezer over night. this should kill anything thats trying to live in it. thats how your ratsies probably got mites in the first place.

mites will find their way into bedding at the petstore and then find tier way onto your babies once you put the bedding with them.

sick dog, not getting answers in the pets section, please help!?

My 5 month old male Shetland sheepdog was given a blood test as a routine precursor to being neutered. The test results revealed a white blood cell count of over 60,000, which is, I am told, more than ten times the normal reading. Numerous tests ensued: more blood tests, ultra sounds of his liver and heart, a liver biopsy and an attempt at a bone marrow aspirant (which failed, as the vet was only able to extract blood). It was determined that his liver and his gall bladder were both greatly enlarged. He was also tested for various tick-borne diseases. All tests came back negative. He was put on a course of antibiotics (Clavamox 375 mg per day). After an initial drop in white cell count, subsequent blood tests revealed no change in his white blood cell count. I should add that Bailey’s health otherwise appears excellent. He is full of energy, is playful, and alert. There appears to be no outward sign of any illness. The doctors are stumped. I assume that the next step will be to send him to some kind of specialist. Has ANYONE had any experience with these types of symptoms? If so, what was the diagnosis and/or resolution?
