Is a rat a good pet? (Names, medical, etc..)?

I’m thinking about getting a rat (or two) with my Christmas money (which is about $200-300), but I’m not sure. I currently own a winter white hamster, and a fish. If I get a rat, I might not be able to afford to pay for all of my pets. I heard that rats might need medical attention (such as operations and flea treatments) which can require a lot of money. I’m unemployed and 13; it might be a problem. Do rats usually require medical attention often? Also, is it really necessary to get 2 rats? I know that they can get lonely and even depressed if alone. I will most likely be playing with it (and training it!) frequently throughout the day.
And last but not least, what are some good names? I like original names. Like Boris, Dumbledore, Severus, Mathias, Netta, etc..

actually, yes, there are some medical issues common in rats.. I work with them.. but have also had a rat myself that needed a vet.. Fleas are not a huge issue.. don’t worry about that.. (there are sprays sold specifically for small pets and birds)

The worst thing I’ve seen with them is respiritory issues leading to head tilt.. keeping them in a well ventilated cage (NOT a fish tank) will help keep that from happening, but it’s still possible.. if this does happen it’s not a HUGE expense if taken care of right away (they would put the rat on baytril or ditrim most likely).. but if ignored is a very painful way for a rat to die.

the other issue which is most common in females is tumors.. Now, depending on size and severity you may be able to just leave them on.. but if they are in a bad area, and the rat seems uncomfortable you will need to see a vet….

However, having said this.. they are GREAT pets.. I would still have them to this day if I didn’t own a dog bred for rat killing.. (I can train them to leave it while I’m there, but once I leave I’d be taking a huge chance) I would recommend 2, as you may believe that you will be playing with it.. but rats are fairly active at night.. while you are sleeping.. so the rat will be alone when it is at it’s most playful.. I brought my rat EVERYWHERE with me when I had him alone.. had a carrying case specifically for him.. he never sat in his cage for more then one or two hours while I was awake. (I was a night owl as well.. so he’d be out until about 2 am.. )

If it makes you feel better just put a few dollars away from allowance each week (if you get it).. collect pop/soda cans to return (sorry, I’m from the east cost where it’s soda, but live north where it’s pop.. so I use both) .. find a local vet that takes exotics.. (you can even call and ask the price for an exam just in case you ever need to know) .. if you ever absolutely NEED to see a vet for the rat(s) it wouldn’t hurt to ask for help from family/friends.

I wouldn’t let the vet issue keep you from getting them.. some people never need them.. the truth is.. hamsters are JUST as likely to need vets as they are.. (fish not so much, but.. when they get sick the meds are not cheap either) There is a chance that you will have no health issues at all…

and to comment on the males smell.. it’s not a BAD smell.. they smell like slightly strong fritos.. it’s just a musky scent.. Mine was male and I loved him.. I currently work with females and love all of them as well.. just make sure you can handle it right away.. having it be nervous isn’t a huge problem, but biting can be.. if the seller picks it up by the tail, don’t buy it.. and if it’s sneezing .. don’t buy it..

Hello, My dog just had surgery today and the vet gave us pills ( Rimadyl) Well it says they are 75mg and to cut in half. Well inside the bottle is 4 pills instead of 2. And they are pre cut. I am afraid of over dosing my dog. (she is a small corgi [1year])
So do i give her the pill whole (pre cut whole) or half of the pill) I have already called the pet hotline on the bottle but they don’t know since they haven’t seen her…and the vets office is closed.

the correct dosage is 2mg per pound once a day with food. Doublr the dogs weight for the correct dosage once a day.
At that dosage I would gather that she is roughly 20 pounds give or take, so 1/2 of a 75mg pill (if they are chewables it is brown , fairly large and square, scored in the middle) is the correct dosage once a day.

A few weeks ago I posted about a problem with my dog. (The answers were great, thanks). She is 14 year old part lab/part shep. She was very stiff/limping and appeared agitated. The vet diagnosed arthritis. He prescribed Rimadyl. He also provided antibiotics (which she finished the other day) for a sore (like a bed sore in humans). However, as of last night she doesn’t really want to eat (did not eat her food, just a few bites) and is listless moreso than ever. Prior to the meds she would pace and limp. The vet didn’t do blood work and I am concered that she coud have cancer or something else, she is 14, or possibly this is a Rimadyl or antibotic side affect?

Absolutely what you’re describing could be a side effect of Rimadyl. The vet absolutely should have done blood work and it’s negligent that they didn’t. Older dogs are often known to have problems with their kidneys. The manufacturer states in the package insert that you should have received with this medication that blood work is required before prescribing. It’s bad enough that vets prescribe this drug at all, but to do so without the mandated precautions is criminal. Just four months ago, I witnessed an older GSD who was prescribed Rimadyl and then wouldn’t eat and was extremely listless. With antibiotics, you usually see diarrhea or vomiting if they’re having an adverse reaction. Do you think I can live with a pet allergy without medication?

I think I might be allergic to my daughter’s new puppy. My skin itches in random places at random times or if I hold her, then my arm and wrist itch, or if she plays at my feet and jumps on my legs, then my legs and feet itch, or if I snuggle her under my chin, then my chin itches. I am guessing this itchiness does not last otherwise you would be itching all over and insane by now. So I would say if you FEEL like you can live with it then you can. I would suggest washing up after holding the dog, by getting the dander off of you it might lessen the itching. I would also give the dog fish oil mixed in with it’s food it will reduce dander a bit and could probably help you. (As well as improve the dog’s skin quality.. never a bad thing for a dog.)

You have probably never had any medical training – let alone given your pet medication.

This course (this article is the first of a 7 part course) will not turn you in to a practicing veterinarian, but I can show you the basic ways to examine your pet, make a tentative diagnosis, and treat your pet — all in the comfort of your home.

WEEKLY EXAM

Your pet should get a thorough nose to tail exam once a week.

Get comfortable in examining your pet. Your pet should be fine with letting you put your fingers in his mouth or brushing his hair to feel for lumps.

The first thing that you have to be familiar with is normals:

CATS AND DOGS

Vital Statistics: Pulse and Heart Rate

Normal resting rates:

Cats: 150-200 bpm

Small dogs: 90-120 bpm

Medium dogs: 70-110 bpm

Large dogs: 60-90 bpm

Pulse should be strong, regular and easy to locate.

Checking the pulse

The easiest place to locate a pulse is the femoral artery in the groin area. Place your fingers on the inside of the hind leg and slide your hand upward until the back of your fingers touches the abdomen. Gently move your fingers back and forth on the inside of the hind leg until you feel the pulsing blood. Count the number of pulses in 15 seconds and multiply that number by 4. This will give you the beats per minute (bpm).

If the pulse is elevated, then you may be dealing with a nervous pet, an underlying metabolic disease, such as hyperthyroidism, or a primary heart problem.

If the pulse is slower and weak, then I look for other signs of shock (ie. internal bleeding) or a poison, such as marijuana toxicity.

This is what I would advise in the case of poison:

TO YOUR VETERINARIAN. If your pet is showing signs of ingesting a poison, it is important that she is examined by your veterinarian and treated appropriately. Some toxins can progress and lead to severe seizures. If you suspect Antifreeze poisoning, it must be treated within 4-6 hours, before irreversible kidney damage is done.

PURGE THE POISON. In most cases of poisoning, getting your pet to vomit is the most important thing that you can do. DO NOT INDUCE VOMITING if something caustic has been consumed (such as drain cleaner or bleach). To induce vomiting, give hydrogen peroxide at 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs of body weight. If your pet does not vomit in 10 minutes, repeat again. NEVER do more than two treatments of peroxide. You can also try salt: dilute 1 teaspoon of salt in a tablespoon of water per every 10lbs of body weight.

DELAY ABSORPTION. Activated charcoal is readily available at most pharmacies. It delays absorption of any toxin by binding to the toxic compound in the stomach. The easiest way is to give the capsule form. For those garbage-eating dogs (such as my own dog) it is a good idea to have hydrogen peroxide and activated charcoal always on hand.

Temperature

A normal dog’s temperature is 101 F (38.0 C), a normal cat’s temperature is 102 F (38.5 C). Taking your pet’s temperature involves placing a thermometer in their rectum. If your pet has a temperature of 103.5 F (39.5 C) or more, they have a fever.

Thermometer should be almost clean when removed.

Abnormalities are indicated by blood, diarrhea, or black, tarry stool.

These are some of the remedies I would use if your pet had a fever:

KEEP THEM HYDRATED. Offer plenty of fresh water in different spots around the house. If your pet refuses to drink, use an eyedropper or turkey baster to squirt water into the side of its mouth. For an added boost, add Pedialyte, an electrolyte solution available from the pharmacy; minerals become depleted when your pet is dehydrated. Some pets prefer chicken or beef broth, or tuna juice; give them whatever works.

CALL YOUR VETERINARIAN. If a fever persists for more than 24 hours, and your pet is not drinking, then CALL your VET.

HOMEOPATHIC. A common remedy for fighting fever is Hepar sulph (Hepar sulphuris calcareum); give one 30C tablet every 6 hours for 3 days. Arnica is useful in fighting the aches and pains that go along with fever; give one 30C tablet per 40lbs of body weight every 4-6 hours.
