Some of your pets summer misadventures

I want you to discover some of the misadventures that may occur during the warm summer season to your favorite pets. Do not worry! There will be no surperstitions or black cats or ladders … Only real mishaps that do happen to some of our pets during the summer season!

There is always more emergencies at the vet during the summer. It’s a classic. Here are some of the problems that are present more commonly with the weather.

Heat strokes

Heat strokes are life or death emergencies. Dogs, cats and several other exotic pets are vulnerables, simply because they produce almost no sweat. In fact, they sweat just at the footpads. So these animals have more difficulty than we have to cool off their bodies during hot days when the humidity is oppressive. When their body temperature reached 42 degree C, all the proteins that form the organs literally cook. Medical complications are numerous and deaths are frequent. This kind of events generally occurs when an animal is left in a parked car, even if only for a few minutes. This can also occur if the animal is brought to do prolonged strenuous exercises. It is therefore very important to have some restrain on the exercises and, most importantly, do not leave your pets in a parked car during hot weather.

Road accidents

Ask any emergency room veterinarian and he will tell you without hesitation that in the majority of cases of animals struck by a car occurred during the fine weather. There are simply more opportunities for a dog without a leash to run across the street unaware of cars and to get struck: We and our dogs are more often outside during the summer season, we frequently go to the park with our dogs, house doors are opened and fences as well … Accidents are numerous, they arrive quickly. The hot spot is actually a painful and intense inflammation of the skin. Limited at first to a small area of skin, it grows rapidly if left untreated. The skin area is red, irritated, wet and very uncomfortable and it increases more and more at the same time as the pain and discomfort. The hot spot can be caused by many things such as insect bites, contact allergies, seasonal allergies and parasites, but it remains that swimming is one of the most frequent causes, because such problems often develops when an area of skin becomes moist and hot, and not ventilated.

Otitis among swimming dogs?

In general ear infections are more frequent among dogs with long droopy ears, ear inflammations occurs more often as a result of swimming. All this because of humidity, which creates a comfortable zone for the development of bacterias or fungus. Like for children otitis the disease requires treatment for several days and medications should be prescribed by a veterinarian. A good way to prevent this problem? After swimming, use a good dog ear cleaner with the power to also dry the inside of the ears. Ask for the advice of a veterinarian.

Many cats and dogs are allergic to pollens

A lot of people, are allergic to certain pollens during the spring season and also around the beginning of august develop hay fever, they sneeze and have running noses. Just like us, a many cats and dogs are allergic to various seasonal pollens. However, their allergic symptoms are manifested differently. Cats and dogs suffer from allergic cutaneous itching. They scratch, bite or rub themselves all over the body, or sometimes only at targeted locations, such as legs, nose or ears. Furthermore, it is not uncommon to find pets that are allergic to various insect bites or even to flea bites. Again, the first symptoms are intense itching and scratching of the skin.

Pets have to be watched like a 2 year old child, they get into things that may not be good for them. Medications, plants, foods, cleaning supplies and other toxic substances must be kept away from pets to avoid accidental poisonings.

What to do if you suspect your pets has been poisoned

Try to identify the toxic substance. Look for traces in or around the mouth. Empty bottles or containers may be a clue. Check for distinctive odors.
If the animal vomits, note carefully the appearance of the vomitus. If there are pill or plant fragments, put them in a plastic baggy for identification.
Try to estimate the amount that the pet has eaten. Some things are only toxic in large doses.
Note any symptoms that your pet may be having.
Call your veterinarian.
Do not induce vomiting unless advised to do so by your veterinarian.

I’d say a good place to start is petinsurancereview.com which is a great third party review site.
There are about a dozen pet insurance companies in the US and probably 4 or so of them are really good and worth considering.

I have my rescue dog insured with Trupanion and I really like them. They repaid my only claim within a week. They don’t have annual limits and don’t increase your rates due to aging.

I’d like to invest in a business, one that offers low interest loans for veterinary bills?

Are there any other pet health care funding organizations? I’ve got some money to invest. Two years ago, a friend with OK credit and not much credit had a sick pet. She ended up financing this on a credit card with 24% interest! The amount was over $2,000. When she told me, I loaned her the money at only 6% interest. She was going to have to make payments of about $78 per month for 3 years. My loan only cost her $72 per month and it took only 2.5 years to pay off. She’s nearly done. Her pet is still fine and she’s not in deep debt for owning and loving a pet…
Surely there’s people out there that will not take advantage of pet owners when they are vulnerable and in need of a loan. Thanks for sharing your experiences.

I think the high interest reflects the high risk of the enterprise. When the animal requires emergency treatment the owner with no established line of low interest credit previously,no savings for just this type of occurrance,and presumably not in good standing with the pay-day loan people also high interest,due to non-employment or other,no family or unwilling- to- loan- money family(one must wonder why) and last but not at all least! no investment in low cost pet insurance plans…When you find yourself desiring to help this person( who was responsible) and others in this situation…mainly the animals owned by the sometimes irresponsible people who cannot afford or plan for the health care needs of their pets…not that this is always the case…and of couse it may be a young person or someone who has just not considered the real cost of pet ownership whose” heart is in the right place” and this is one of the reasons that so many millions of innocent animals are put to death , abandoned ,neglected,or taken to the pound every year…perhaps someone knew that person couldn’t afford to buy a pet so they got one for free…and this is a possible result…do not perpetuate or support this mess…I dislike that we have so many laws but something should be done… often people do not repay the loans and this is why the vet no longer can just bill us and we all have to pay up front ,and we all end up paying for the care of the irresponsible pet owners bills through higher bills for the ones who do pay….haven’t you noticed,as this is a factor of what your friend experienced? Support some initiative for mandatory pet health insurance if you own a pet. Or go into a low cost pet health insurance business that is offered with the pet’s first shots; even though this is already being done… maybe yours could be offered through a pet food store. What do you think of this? Or initiate/get involved in some philanthropic venture to provide therapy pets complete with paid health insurance to the shut in ,or disabled or elderly that are lonely and in great need of the comfort of a pet and truly on a low ,fixed income, this could work hand in hand with pet rescue groups to give good homes to animals that would have been put to death. You sound like a wonderfully good hearted person and I truly hope you find a satisfying investment that can help make the world a better place.

What company/organization has the best most reasonable price on pet health insurance?

I have one dog with a preexisting heartworm condition and the other is healthy. Who offers a better deal? and has anyone gone through the ASPCA for pet health insurance?

Keep in mind, with any insurance policy, on average, the insurance company has to win.

In other words, they will take in more money than they ever pay out.

If it were the other way around, they would go out of business. My feeling is, that one is better off (if one can be disciplined enough) to put the money that you would have spent on the insurance premiums, and put it in a seperate account, that you don’t touch, except for vet bills.

On average that way, you’ll win. The only time this doesn’t work, is if you have some large, unexpected bill show up that you can’t absorb. In these cases, you can often secure some kind of loan or financing option to pay for the deficit.
