I have VPI and I have been very pleased with them. It costs me $240 a year for both of my dogs. However, the have a very set procedure that you need to follow.

Pet insurance does not work like people insurance, you still have to pay the full amount of the service at the vet and then you fax in a claim form to VPI and they directly reimburse you within a couple of weeks, So, you still need a credit card or some way to pay your vet. It is false that some vets don’t accept, because the vet is never the person who processes the insurance.

They will not cover any heriditary diseases (hip displacia, wobblers, etc) or preexisting conditions. So, to really get your $$ worth you need to start your coverage when your dog is a puppy and renew every year. Some breeds are much more expensive than others and they may not insure you if they choose.

They have a couple different levels of coverage. I pay for only catastrophic injury or illness ($50 deductable), but my dogs are still pretty young and don’t go to the vet a lot. If your dog does, they have a plan that is more per month, but covers regular visits, shots and such. You are required to get a yearly physical for your dog to be covered.

I have only had one smallish claim ($250), but they were very prompt in sending me my check and I have no complaints with them.

Can anyone give me any information on taking my dog on a Trans-Atlantic flight?

My husband and I are military and we are preparing to move bases from Kentucky to Germany this July. I have been trying to research flight information and the best way to go about taking my pet. Zoey, does already have her bilingual pet certificate and necessary paper work for Germany. I would love any recommendations from personal experience.
Some people say to give them anti-nausea medication, or a certain type of food. Right now I am just terribly lost. Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I’ve flown with my dog twice to Switzerland on overnight flights. He was too heavy to fly in the cabin (he’s a standard dachshund), so we had to buy him a crate that was large enough for him to turn in (those are standard requisites). We chose a very safe and dark one so that he would hopefully feel safe and calm. It’s a plastic crate that looks much more like a doggy house than a cage (and it has plenty of slits for ventilation). We had him sleep in it for a few weeks before the flight so it would have his smell.

After hearing the opinion of about 4 different vets, we did not give him any anti-nausea medication as those types of meds usually make the dog drowsy, which reduces the dog’s heart rate and lower his reflexes, which means that he could go into shock in reaction to the cold and that he wouldn’t be able to keep himself from banging around in his crate during turbulence. We ended up giving him no medication at all. The best thing to do is to provide him with lots of fluffy blankets so that he can tunnel under them if it’s cold and climb on top if it’s too hot ( he’ll probably get cold more than hot). We padded the inside walls of his crate with those pads that you hang around a baby’s crib – it gave him extra protection during turbulence. And we installed one of those water bottles with the ball point at the tip, so that the water wouldn’t drip. We secured it to the door in such a way so that the bottle tip wasn’t sticking out (so he couldn’t hit into it during turbulence). His crate’s door happens to have a bowl installed on the door, so we put the tip right over that so that if some drops did leak, it wouldn’t get him wet. Do not put any food in the crate. Nothing bad will happen if he doesn’t eat for 10+ hours (after all, dogs don’t eat while they sleep anyway!). If you feed him, the food mixed with his nerves may increase his urge to defecate or vomit, and you would not want to do that to him during the flight!

For about 4-6 hours before the flight, do not feed him or give him any water, and make sure he relieves himself before boarding. You may want to walk him right outside the airport a couple of times. Ask the airline to let you keep him for as long as possible before boarding (as he will have to board the plane before you do).

It would be a good idea for you to get him used to his crate, particularly if he’s a nervous dog – show him it’s not punishment, get him used to being locked in for short amounts of time and get other people to handle the crate with him in it. This will prevent any embarrassing barking or growling when the airline attendants come to get him!

In both cases, my dog survived the flight with no health problems, no peeing, no vomiting, no defecating. He didn’t even chew on his crate (some dogs do that when they are stressed). He may not have liked it, but at least I know he was safe. He didn’t hate me afterwards either!

Oh, another suggestion – since you’re flying out of Kentucky, I assume you’ll be flying to another city before connecting to a direct flight, am I right? if that’s the case, it would be wise to do the intercity flight a day or two early so that you can give your dog a chance to recuperate from his first time flying. If you can drive to the nearest international airport, great. If not, try to avoid having him experience connecting flights.

These days, most airlines transport animals in a separate pressurized compartment – not the luggage compartment. Still, you have to check with the airline. German and Swiss airlines have this pressurized compartment for live cargo, but you are better off asking them 100 times just to be sure!

pug puppy with a flea allergy?

let me go ahead and give some background information, my delilah was found on craigslist listed for 100 dollars, and i thought oh a papered full bred pug..wait 100 dollars? it did send some red flags, but my husband and son went and got her anyway for my mothers day present, the woman only brought one puppy and they did not see the parents or brothers and sisters, (stupid, i know!) when they brought her home i noticed a sore on her shoulder so i put some neosporin on it and forgot about it, ive had her for a little while now and she has six or seven sores on her. we went to the vet today and she got vaccinated and i got her some revolution for fleas as well as some cephalexin to heal the spots. apparently she has a flea allergy, the medication doesn’t cost much, but is there anything i can do to make her more comfortable? or maybe stop the spots from hurting. what can i treat my home and yard with for fleas? i realize this is like eight questions ha-ha! so.. here are my questions..

1…Warm compresses with water only!!… If she is allergic to fleas she could have sensitivities to other things…continuse to use an antibiotic ointmaent and cover then with a gauze wrap if your able..You dont want her to be able to get to them because licking and chewing will only cause a larger wound..FYI on keeping them covered..My cat got outside and was also wounded so I did as I explained with the water and antibiotic, but..To keep them covered, I purchased a baby onesie from the store and made adjustments for his tail and snapped it between the legs as if he were a child..It not only prevented him from licking, it kept the sores clean and he was sooo cute in it!!! Be sure that you do this process morning, midday and night.Oatmeal baths are also recommended but read up on the recipe online and do not use anything but natural..

Is it safe to purchase pet medication online? All responses/experiences welcome!?

My vet has been charging me $99 per six month supply of Revolution for my two small pets (prevents heartworms & flea/tick infestation). This equates to $396 per year for both animals. I found the same medication, I think, online at Joe’s Pet Meds for $55 per six month supply w/ free shipping. This would equate to a savings of $176 per year, which I think is pretty substantial. I looked into several online retailers and I thought this one looked like the most reputable although it is located in Austrailia… I know I can’t be charged with a crime as this type of pet medication is available over the counter. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I actually would not recommend purchasing your pets medications from online unlicensed “pharmacies”.

Do NOT buy from 1-800-pet meds, Petmeds or any other online pet medication services! 1-800 pet meds is not a licensed pharamacy. It is your Vet’s job to look out for the safelty of your pet. Your Vet can be held legally responsible if they write a script for 1-800 because it is VERY rare that Petmeds provides you with the correct, quality medication that you could otherwise purchase from your vet for typically around the same price. I do suggest you check out different prices through Vet offices in your area. Our Vet clinic is cheaper or as expensive as ALL the medications found on these internet companies.

Internet sites are largly unlicensed and unregulated by any state or federal agancy. Some companies, like 1-800 Petmeds, have been getting and selling products illegally. Some medications that have expired have been repackaged. Medications meant for distribution to Austrailia and other FOREIGN markets have also been obtained by these companies. Clients have received medications having instructions in a foreign language! Many of these internet companies have been prosecuted for selling COUNTERFEIT medications that are cheap medications or worse, harmful to the person or animal taking them.

Some sites buy cheap medications in THIRD WORLD countries where quality control is poor or doesn’t even exist, and repackage and resell them at huge profit as licensed drugs from the United States which they certaintly are NOT. Other scams involve the numbers of tablets or medications. Drugs such as Heartguard and Frontline come in 6 or 12 counts from the manufactorer. Many consumers buy the large size thereby getting additional tablets or medications free. The internet companies don’t want you to know that there are 6 and 12 packs or that you can actually get free product from your verterinarian (at my office… you purchase 6 months of Frontline and get one dose free).

Did you know that guarentees offered by the drug companies are VOID once the product is purchased over the internet by one of these companies? It’s true!!

Purchasing questionable or substandard medications is not the answer- you are wasting your money and risking your pet’s health.

The main question you need to ask yourself is: Is saving money worth the peace of mind of the health of you pet?

well i have almost fallen for this scam. I have looked it up and if they dont have a real website and they want you to pay through western union to cameroon it is a total scam. It is a way for sick people to make money and you will almost never get it back. They will also call you with a problem saying they need more money or that it wont go threw. dont send more money and you probably wont get a dog or your lost money. i feel sorry for anyone that has follen for this. i was one of the lucky ones that saw this site before i sent the money. i was supposed to get a yorkie. i hope that we help other people not to do this

Actually by the time he’s 10 yrs, he will no longer be covered by insurance. I tried insurance for a while on one of my dogs and found it to be very ‘not’ worth it, especially because it doesn’t cover older dogs. The vets I dealt with didn’t accept the insurance co’s. allowable rates for treatment. Those amounts were about half of what the vet charged, ..and then they’d only pay about half of that allowable amount. Unless you can find a vet that accepts those amounts, I don’t recommend it. If your dog is young, you’re better off putting the $30/mo or more in an interest bearing account. Also get a credit card that you save just for veterinary emergencies.
