As pet owners, we know that there are times when our dog becomes ill and medication becomes necessary. Nowadays, there are many places to buy pet medication online, but how do we know how to choose the right kind, how to we choose the right website to go to, and how do we know we’re getting the best deal? Well, all good questions, and the answers lie with someone who has had experience with buying pet medication online.

Let’s follow someone who has done this before, and see the steps that we can take, too, to know how to buy pet medication online in the future. First, he makes his careful selection of the medication, then he does his online shopping, and then he does his comparison pricing before making the final decision. Sound like something you want to learn, too?

The first thing he does is to decide on the right medication. After the first diagnosis of the symptom that his dog is demonstrating, he may already know what medication is required from past history of this dog, or he may have to consult with his veterinarian for advice. Once he’s sure what medication he needs to buy, he goes to his computer and starts to research the online websites for dog medication. Some he’s familiar with, but he realizes that there are a few new ones he hadn’t used yet, so he’s going to check them out for reputation, for the brand of the medication, and the label he sees online for contents and dosage.

Prices can vary dramatically within the online pet medication sites. After comparing and determining that a few sites carry the same medication, he will carefully compare apples with apples to make sure that the prices match perfectly. In other words, the same dose with the same type of medicine in the same type of medium. He reads the application instructions very carefully to be sure that they are the same and that they are the right medicine the vet prescribed. Additionally, some sites offer free shipping and some even offer no sales tax, depending on the state.

Use the same care as for all family members. Our dogs have become a family member, too, so the same care that one would practice in choosing medicine for a human member of the family is the same care required for our dog family member. When the medicine arrives, he takes special notice that he has received what he ordered, that the dosage is correct, and everything is as it should be. If all checks out perfectly, he is now ready to administer the medicine to his dog.

Of course, time may be of the essence in some cases, and if that is your situation, you have to make sure that your medicine will arrive as quickly as it is needed. If it cannot be in your hands fast enough, your online purchase may not work for you this time, and you may have to purchase from your vet or dog supply store immediately. Check and see if your online pet medication supplier has overnight shipment available to you if that is necessary.

If you follow this experienced dog owner’s online shopping method for pet medication by first deciding on the right medication, researching the price and quality of the pet medication, and then taking special care that the medication is exactly what was ordered before giving it to your dog, you should have no problem at all in ordering pet medication from online websites.

(By Joe Cinova)

So your child has finally expressed an interest in getting a pet. With so many things to consider how do you choose the appropriate pet for them? There are many factors you need to concern yourself with before making that final decision.

Although pets are a truly educational and playful way for your kids to spend their time, as the person “in charge” and the one ultimately responsible for the animal you need to ask yourself an important question? What am I willing to accept having in the house?

You would like to think that whatever you decide the child will love it and take of it forever. Realistically though, they may get bored and are you going to tolerate the pet once they are being ignored by the child?

The first and foremost concern is to look at the age of the child. Some people are convinced that getting a new pet with a young baby creates a certain bond over the life of the pet. This may be true. But if the child is 2 or 3 years old for example and you decide to buy a huge dog like let’s say Saint Bernard, who’s going to spend all their time making sure the shear size of the dog doesn’t hurt the child? You? Do you have the time?

In a short period of time, this dog as well as others are going to weigh a lot and will tower over the child. A playful swipe of the paw can knock them down and hurt them. All the dog wanted to do is play. How about a cat? If like most people you don’t have them declawed, those claws can be really harmful. Again all the cat wanted to do is play.

How about when your child wants his own toy and the dog has it. The child wants it, grabs it and the dog shows their teeth and maybe even nips them. I realize that this act can happen with any pet but with a smaller pet it’s a lot safer around your kids.

I’ve raised 8 dogs, (currently 3 Min Pins), and 6 cats. So I’m certainly not against them. I’m just passing along some good advice about what I’ve seen over the years. Pets are a lot of work around children and you need to be prepared for it as the parent.

Next, determine the interests of the child. If they tend to be more “involved” in things then don’t get a pet that won’t keep their interest. For example, having the responsibility of cleaning out a birdcage, with you helping the child, keeps the child interested.

Feeding them and playing with the pet stops the child from getting bored. Watching a goldfish in a bowl just might not cut it. And remember who gets to take care of the pet when they won’t. You do.

If your child wants a pet that just doesn’t make sense, then you have to talk to them about it. We all know that a “no” in this instance won’t stop them from asking. Try to get them interested in an alternate pet. One good way may be to take them to a library. Bring out lots of pet books and let them look them over. A compromise may not be far off.

How much time and effort are you willing to put into the care of whatever pet you want to buy? Reading up on the animal, fish, reptile or whatever is a smart thing to do before you buy it. Sometimes there are certain aspects of the pet care that may turn you off to owning them. Sometimes it’s just too much work.

I used to raise freshwater and saltwater fish with my brother. We had over 20 tanks, with the largest being over 100 gallons. For us it was great fun. For someone else it may just be a lot of work. Cleaning the filters, feeding them, what happens when they have babies, is the heater working, etc, etc, etc. Again this isn’t meant to turn you off just enlighten your decision making process.

How about a snake, I’ve raised them too. Just Garter snakes mind you but they still can be a lot of work to take care of them. How about getting them their food or watching them eat bugs? Is this something you and the child want to do and watch?

You know common sense really is in order when buying a pet. Taking into consideration the dos and don’ts of pets can help make the decision easier. Do you have a small or big house? Do you live in an apartment? Who takes care of the pet when you want to go away on a trip? Is the pet noisy, like a hamster taking a 2am run on their cage wheel. Is this going to bother you or anyone else in the family?

Take some time, write down some limits for what you will and will not do or accept when dealing with a particular pet. Know where they will stay once they are in the house. Assign each child or family member part of the overall pet care responsibility. Making the most out of the situation will not only keep the pet happy but the whole household as well.

Remember, there is no one right or wrong answer. You need to spend time to determine what is right for you. The most important thing for you is consistency and patience. Pets are great. Don’t let the little things stop you from enjoying their company. You’ll be glad you did and so will they!

Thanks For Reading!

Does anyone else have pet peeves about people who answer pet questions?

These are my pet peeves:

* people who give every answer a thumbs down, regardless of how correct or incorrect
* people who give a thumbs down on a personal opinion, not a bad answer
* people who don’t have e-mail available when you have something really important to tell them after an answer is closed
* Jessica and her biker ads
* people who answer serious questions with smart aleck answers
* people who answer with ‘I don’t know’ just to get points
* people who ask stupid questions just to get a rise out of people (hypothetical question: How do I cook my pet, microwave or oven?)
* ignorant people who have pets and haven’t the faintest idea how to care for them and feed them
* people who ask obvious ignorant questions (hypothetical example: my pet just got run over and I don’t think it will live. What should I do?) Duh! What do you tell your hurt pet…hold on there, let me fire up the computer and see what people on Yahoo! Answers think? Gee, best answer: take to vet now!

Answer
Yes, those folks who don’t understand the feeding, shots, basic care and SPAY/NEUTER issues of pet owning really piss me off.
As do people with OBVIOUS major issues who want advice on how to ‘fix’ thier pets major medical problems for free (the take to the vet NOW group).
I often don’t even look in the pets category because I get so sick of typing “take to vet NOW”.

Pet allergies are like many other allergies triggered by airborne irritants. Understanding the following 5 areas about allergies will help you manage your pet and your allergies effectively.

Cause—-Pet allergies result when your body overreacts to allergens produced by pets. The body sees these as harmful and uses every means possible to eject them from its system. Typically irritants include dander (dead skin flakes), dried urine and feces which become airborne, and dried saliva. The protein is usually what causes the problem. It remains unclear what determines how a person’s body will react to allergens.

Symptoms—When the body tries to get rid of the irritants that it sees as threatening sneezing, coughing, watering eyes, congestion because of increased mucous production occur. These can range from irritating to disrupting depending on how threatened your immune system is by these allergens.

Precautions—If you have not already adopted a pet, spending a lot of time with the animal before you make a final decision is best. Having the animal in close proximity to you frequently will let you know fairly quickly whether your body will overreact with allergic symptoms. As painful as the discovery may be, knowing whether you are allergic before you adopt is better for both you and the pet.

Plan of Action—If your pet is already a part of the family, finding another home for it is probably the last resort. So thinking outside the box can help you continue to enjoy your pet.

Consider making the bedroom a pet-free area. Creating this safe area may allow you to continue to enjoy your pet in other parts of your home.

Opt for floor covering other than wall-to-wall carpet in the bedroom. Carpet allows allergens to collect more easily than hard surfaces that are able to be cleaned more thoroughly. Consider moving upholstered furniture to other rooms. This type of furniture invites pets to lounge, and is a handy place for allergens to collect.

Use a high efficiency particle arresting (abbreviated as HEPA) air purifier to remove airborne pet dander and hair that inevitably sticks to clothing and hair and goes airborne when dressing or undressing. This type of filter is also able to remove other airborne particles that often trigger allergy symptoms such as dust, dust mites, and mold and mildew spores.

Being able to effectively manage your pet allergies can help you keep and enjoy your pet. It will also increase the quality of life for all who live with you.

Manage your pet allergies by removing pet allergens from the air with the air purifier from PurerAir.com now at http://purerair.com/allergy_machine.html

I recently have had 2 puppies die? What are some symptoms from the pet food recall?

Answer
Some of the symptoms are decreased appetite, vomiting, lethargy and extreme thirst. I’m so sorry for your loss.

Chances are, at one time or another you will need to turn to someone else to care for your dog. Perhaps you’ve accepted a work assignment that will keep you out of town for a month. Maybe you’re finally going on that long awaited cruise. Whatever the reason, you find yourself in need of someone dependable and trustworthy to care for Rover. Although some dogs do best at home with a pet sitter, other dogs do better in a boarding kennel. Consider your dog’s personality and needs before making a decision.

Things to know up front: For kennels, pet boarding is a business. Their success depends on volume as much as quality care. Kennels care for many animals at the same time and your pet will probably be kept in a cage or run. Don’t expect a kennel to give your pet the same kind of attention and affection that you do; it just won’t happen. But good kennels employee people with a natural love of dogs that will be kind and gentle and care for your pet to the best of their ability.

Kennel choices: Most vet offices offer boarding services. While vet office care may be limited, with smaller cages and limited exercise opportunities, many people, especially those whose animals have medical needs, feel more secure leaving their pets with a trusted vet. Other owners turn to private boarding kennels that can range from bare-bones to luxurious. Sparse facilities do not differ much from vet offices. Cages are usually small and exercise is limited to two walks a day. More expensive facilities offer mixed playtime for dogs that are socialized, outdoor exercise areas, larger runs rather than cages, and grooming services (all of which may be at an extra charge). Upscale doggie hotels are all the rage in some areas. Your dog may receive a massage, bath and haircut, obedience training, soothing music and luxurious bedding while you’re gone.

Where to start: Whatever level of care you decide on, there are some basic things to know and do before making a final decision on where to board your pet. Price, comfort, health and safety are all valid concerns. After all, you’re entrusting someone else with one of the most emotionally valuable things in your life.

Ask friends, neighbors, family, and your vet or dog trainer for recommendations. Then do a little background investigation. If your state requires licensing and inspections, make sure the kennels you are considering are in good standing. Also ask whether the prospective kennel belongs to the American Boarding Kennels Association. This trade association promotes professional standards, requires members subscribe to a code of ethics, and offers accreditation for professionalism, safety and quality of care. If you’re satisfied that a kennel meets basic requirements, schedule a visit.

What to look for: First impressions are important. Sniff the air as soon as you walk in. There should be no strong antiseptic smell or odor of urine or feces. Some antiseptic odor is understandable in concrete areas, but if odors assail your nose as you walk in the door, you may want to consider another kennel.

Look for a pleasant atmosphere. Do the current boarded dogs look happy? Do they come to the front of the kennel to greet you? Dogs that lie to the back and do not interact are a bad sign. Is the staff competent, confident, friendly and caring or do they seem harassed and irritable? Are there a sufficient number of workers or are they short-handed and overworked? Is the kennel owner ready and willing to show you where your dog will be housed and exercise areas? If not, cross this one off your list.

Make mental notes as you tour the facilities. Are dog beds clean? Look for clean food bowls and water bowls without scum or floating objects. Are the runs clean or is there feces lying around? It’s impossible to keep all runs clean 100% of the time, but you’ll be able to tell the difference between filth and recent deposits. Is the kennel yard full of debris? Is the building in need of serious repair? Is there good ventilation and a comfortable temperature? If possible, take a look at the kitchen. A clean kitchen is a good indicator of a clean pet area. Get a tour of outdoor exercise areas and runs. Are they protected from the elements? Is the noise level overwhelming? Although it is impossible to prevent dogs from barking, especially while someone is walking through the facility, the kennel should not be overcrowded to the point where dogs are constantly barking. Observe any activities offered. Note especially how aggressive dogs are handled.

Brass tacks: If your first impressions are favorable, then get down to details. You need to know if pets are required to be current on vaccinations. Some kennels now require that your dog be vaccinated against Bordetella, canine kennel cough. Many kennels will allow you to bring your dog’s regular food. It not only cuts down on their costs, but helps your dog adjust to kennel life. If it is important that your pet stay on his regular diet, ask; don’t just assume. What veterinary services are available? Does the kennel have a vet on call? You may prefer that the kennel call your vet if there is a need. Make this information readily available and let your vet know that your pet will be staying at a kennel while you are gone. Ask questions about feeding schedules. If your pet needs regular doses of medication, make sure this service is offered. Find out how much exercise your dog will be getting and how often they are allowed to potty. Can you bring your dog’s bedding from home and his favorite toy? Is it important to you that a staff member be on the property around the clock? If so, make sure this is the case at your chosen facility. Be sure to get a breakdown of charges. Some services are included in basic daily rates, some are not. If price is an issue, get the details worked out up front so you won’t be surprised when you get home. And last, but not least, trust your instincts. If you just don’t feel good about a particular kennel, go somewhere else.

Prepare your pet: So, you’ve taken all the preliminary measures and selected a kennel for your pet. Now you need to prepare Rover for his stay. If the facility offers doggy day care services in addition to longer term care, give your pet the chance to try it out. Take him once or twice for just the day. Take special note of his first impressions and reactions. Quiz the staff on his behavior and interaction with the other animals.

Be sure your pet knows basic commands. Make sure he is current on vaccinations and is flea-free (most kennels require it). If your pet is going to be at the kennel for an extended time, you may consider a trial run of a weekend excursion. This allows you to work out any kinks before the longer stay. If necessary, teach your dog to sit before being petted or fed and to walk quietly on a leash. Socialize him to strangers, especially if medication or grooming will be provided at the kennel. Make sure he is accustomed to a crate if he will be in one at the kennel. It will make the stay less stressful and fearful for your pet.

Prepare the kennel staff: No one likes surprises, not even kennel staff who are accustomed to working with all animal personalities. If your dog has any unusual fears, aggression triggers or other idiosyncrasies, be honest for the safety and well-being of all involved. Let them know if Rover is not reliably housetrained, hates men or eats things he’s not supposed to.

On kennel day: Exercise Rover before you turn him over to the kennel staff. Leave the kids at home. Walk in the kennel door, give Rover a gentle pat, tell him you’ll see him soon and let him go. Long goodbyes, hugs and tears will only stress out your pet (and you). He’s not going to hate you for leaving. Go have fun.

Coming home: One last thing, don’t be surprised or alarmed if your dog segregates himself and sleeps a lot upon coming home. He is not upset with you or had a miserable time. Dogs in kennels are awake from the crack of dawn until nighttime. They are excited by barking dogs, meal times and visitors walking past them. He may simply be exhausted.

Boarding kennels can be a good solution for those times when your pet has to be left behind. Do your homework and find the best facility for you and your pet. It is well worth the time. Your peace of mind and your pet’s health are your reward.

I have a few questions about pet rats?

I have a few questions, so if you know the answers to even just one of them, please do answer!

-Which gender is the friendliest and most compatible as a pet?

-What is the best breed to get?

-What are some of the best organizations (aside from the humane society) to get rescued rats from?

-What are some of the less known things about caring for a pet rat? I know all the basics.

-And, what is the best type of cage to buy, and the best toys to get/make?

~ I assure that I will treat my pet rat with respect and love. I will give it plenty of attention and have much experience in taking care of pets~

Thank-you for sharing your knowledge

Answer
1. Both are wonderfully compatible. It really depends on if you want a big, loveable couch potato (males) or a fun, energetic, non-stop ball of fire (female)…but you must remember….there are exceptions to the standard personalities (some males are like females, and vise versa)

2. Best breed, again this goes with what you like. No hair, little hair, all hair. Dwarf, or standard size, dumbo or standard ear, tail or tailess….there are many options, but pick what you like the best. I like standard size, standard and satin coat, dumbo’s with tails…just personal preference .

3. I found my boys on Petfinder.com, also there are places like craigslist.com, hoobly.com, and many rat forums have classifieds and rescue ratties for adoption. Find a reputable breeder if you want a baby, or a nice rescue if you want to adopt a wonderful older ratty. Mine are 8 months old (just got them 3 weeks ago) and the sweetest, and they were rescues..so dont judge by age or wether they come from breeder/rescue. Many rats are great, but have had troubles in their life.

4. Less known things….they will ALWAYS suprise you with their intellegence, and funny antics, and cuddly affections. You can never predict what a rat will do. Ummmm…..The most important thing is diet. they should be on a high/good quality lab block. Mixes that are sold in petstores are junk for rats. I suggest Mazuri (what i use, available in most petsmarts) and Harlan Teklad (available online). Fresh fruit and veggies are always a good idea for daily food. Fresh water is a must….and when adding new rats to a group…be sure to quarentine….i know of people who have ahd a whole colony wiped out by one single new ratty b/c it was sick and not QT’d Join a rat forum!! one of the best things i did. Ratforum.com is GREAT….wonderful people and lots of info.

5. Tyoe of cage…..a cage..not an aquarium The minimum for a pair of boys is 36″Hx18″Wx18″D, and that same cage can hold about 3 females. The bigger the better. Ebay is always a good place to start when looking for cages, cheap and good quality. If you search “sugar glider cage” you get a large ammount of large great cages, and “rat cage” you get a good number of smaller suitable cages….but before you buy, always check the cage calculator… http://www.rattycorner.com/odds/calc.shtml put in the size of the cage (make sure to switch it to inches!) and it will tell you how many rats it can hold (mine can hold 8)……ramps and shelves and hammocks and tunnels are wonderful for ratties. Toys…anything that looks safe. http://www.dapper.com.au/toys.htm

Pet health care has experienced tremendous growth in the past 5 years. New advancements in disease treatment and prevention have improved the quality of life for our pets, but the average cost of care per animal has risen substantially. This has lead to pet owners seeking any opportunity to save money on medical costs. One of the more popular ways to save is to buy discount pet meds online. But before you jump into the online marketplace, here are some important things to watch for.

Total Cost
Unlike books or computers that have a relatively straightforward pricing structure, pet meds are packaged in a number of different ways. Frontline Plus for example (a popular flea control product), is packaged according to dog size as well as the number of treatments. This is important to note since it is easy for advertisers to draw you in with an attractive price. However, this may not be the best value for your situation if you own a large dog, or perhaps even multiple dogs. The point is to compare prices across a consistent grade in order to find the best discounts.

Shipping
As with any online purchase, shipping can make or break the deal. Pet meds are no exception to this rule, and they can in fact be more susceptible to bait-and-switch techniques. For example, a number of pet medicines require refrigerated delivery which adds to the cost of delivery. Since the consumer typically absorbs this cost through additional fees, the listed price of refrigerated meds rarely represents the total cost to you. Thus, it is important to read the shipping terms and options between merchants before making a final decision.

Support
Customer service is an important part of any sales transaction, but it becomes invaluable when you buying something you cannot inspect until it arrives at your door. Some of the so-called discount pet med suppliers on the internet are merely third-party distributors or warehouses. They are not specialized in the pet care industry, and most of their customer service reps have very little exposure to the products they sell. This not only creates a gap in communication, but it can also lead to a higher percentage of wrong orders. Make sure your online pet med supplier deals solely with pet related products. Ideally they would also feature a staff of veterinarians available to answer any questions you have about their products.

Utilizing the online marketplace is a great way to find cheap pet meds, as long as you know exactly what you are looking for. Consumers can expect to save about 20 percent off of retail prices because the internet retailer has fewer costs than the average retail store. The key to being successful in this market is to do your research before buying. Compare prices of identical products, analyze shipping costs, and look for coupon codes sites like http://1800PetMedsCoupon.com Soon you will be an expert online shopper who enjoys the convenience and savings that can only be found online.
