Every pet owner knows that like any animals, cats need our attention and should not be physically harmed. Most cat breeds are very easy to take care but Persian cats require special attention. Persian cats have long and soft fur so most would think that shedding would be a problem. But unlike other long furred animals, Persian cats shed minimally. This is one reason why they are favored inside the house. Taking care of these cats will not be a hassle as long as you follow simple Persian cats care tips.

Yes, Persian cat does not shed a lot but because of its long furs, they tend to get in the way of what the cat is doing. One problem with its fur is that when your cat poops, some of it sticks to its fur making the cat look dirty and smell bad too. Another problem is that it easily gets mats on its fur which makes it annoying for both you and the cat to get rid of.

To prevent these fur problems, make sure you comb its fur and not brush it. Brushing is not as effective as combing the fur because it leaves some dead fur on the undercoat. Combing its fur daily prevents the fur to tangle with one another. You can also have its fur cut into a lion clip. Its fur will be similar to the lion’s fur. This will remove the fur around its rectum which will prevent the poop from sticking on it. These are some of the basic Persian cat care tips which should be done by the owner regularly.

Here are some Persian cat care tips:

1. Do not play with your cat using your hand especially when the game involves biting. Use toxic free toys instead of your hand to prevent biting habits and avoid unwanted injuries.

2. Keep small objects like coins, pins, eraser and matches away from the cat’s reach. When eaten, it may cause serious injuries to your cat. They might choke on it while others are simply poisonous to your cat.

3. Cats are naturally curious so they tend to lick and smell anything that will trigger their curiosity. So bear in mind to keep soaps, detergents or any hazardous chemicals in a closed storage. It is also best to keep your cat in its cage when you are cleaning the house.

4. Do not allow your cat to over eat. This will cause obesity, vomiting and other health problems. Feed your cat at a specific time. Do not allow your cat to have access to its food whenever it wishes by leaving its bowl full every time.

5. Do not let your cat wander outside your property. Your cat might get into fights, run over by a car or stolen by other people. Always accompany your cat when walking outside.

Cats have precious life that should be treasured. These Persian cat care tips are important to keep your Persian cat happy, healthy and safe from harm.

anyone know a good website to find out about cat care?

my friend is thinking of getting a cat and really she does not know anything about them! (no offense) she needs everything… health, care, nutrition… the whole deal. anyone know a good website?

Answer
There are lots of good sites. I have posted a link on bringing a new kitten/cat into your home, and from it are many links to related articles.

On the article on bringing a new kitten into the house, I would skip the suggestion of a cat bed, and forget about Feliway.

The second and third links pertain to food and feeding, written by the Cornell Vet school. They do not suggest a specific brand, but indicate what to look for in food.

If you are sure your cat has fleas and ticks, then you need to treat your house:

# Most importantly, if you have just discovered the fleas and ticks on cats, then quarantine your cat to one room. Hopefully you will soon be killing fleas and tick quickly and you will soon see your little kitty cat again.

This must be done(unless too late already)so that all cat fleas and ticks will hopefully stay in one room and you wont have a complete flea infestation.

# Vacuum the whole house to get rid of any fleas and ticks on the floors or furniture. They often like to hide in all kinds of places.

# Make sure to wash and disinfect all your clothes in case any fleas or ticks are hiding inside of them, as they often do. Also, you may want to spray your clothes in case fleas have planted their flea larvae inside.

# Next, shake all rugs, if you have any, and vacuum them as well.

# You can also use a flea and tick control spray to get rid of any fleas and ticks on your cat and house. The flea and tick spray to kill any hidding fleas and ticks.

# Make sure to wash your bedroom and other rooms very well too. Any closets or wardrobes must be thoroughly washed and checked.

How to get rid of fleas and ticks on your cat:

# First of all, wash your cat in an ‘anti flea bath.’ This often means you will have to wash your cat in a bathtub with water and flea shampoo.

# Be very careful that the soap and water doesn’t go in your cats eyes. Cats naturally hate water and being bathed so most people who don’t know how to bath a cat will most likely encounter serious difficulty with this step.

To avoid having problems when bathing a cat, I recommend you to read more on how to bath a cat here: http://twitpwr.com/howtowashyourcat/
Or here: http://catlovingcare.com/

# After drying your little cat with a towl, sitt your cat down between your legs and start the work of combing the ticks out. First tackle one half of its hairs before brushing through to remove the fleas and ticks from the other half. Brush slowly and regularly, trying not to pull out any hairs. If there still are some consistent ticks, then use a pair of pincers to pull them out!

# When pulling ticks out of your cats furr, you must be very careful to avoid leaving the head of the tick inside, as this will cause infections, some of them deadly.

# When pulling out a tick, take a lighter and hold it near her or his fur.
Beware to part his or her fur BEFORE lighting the lighter. When the fire comes near the tick, it will roll up and be easy to remove.
WARNING: Be very CAREFUL when using this method of killing fleas and ticks! Sometimes a better option is to search online for a flea and tick remover for example tick twister.

# Make sure to buy a cat flea and tick control. This is needed to be sure that after your hard work killing fleas and ticks on your cat, the fleas and ticks don’t come back again. you can find all kinds of good flea and tick control here: http://squidoo.com/frontline-plus-flea-control-for-cats
Frontline is my personal favorite.

If you get a flea and tick shampoo or treatment online, check the fur every few days to be sure the fleas or ticks are gone. If you do see more fleas or ticks, quarantine your pet, and begin the whole process again.

Hope this will help you quickly start killing fleas and ticks and get rid of fleas and ticks on your pets for good!

which is better for cats frontline plus or advantage?

my cat’s flea medicine is about to run out and I want to know which one is better? I used fronline before, it seemed to work ok, but I heard advantage was better. is this true? if so then why? personal experience with both products would be most helpful!

Answer
Frontline Plus can control fleas, ticks, and mites, whereas Advantage (I believe) only takes care of the fleas. If you were concerned about ticks and mites, then I’d go with the Frontline Plus. I’ve only used Advantage and I think it works just fine. I think it’s a bit cheaper, too, although that might depend on the individual vet office.

Health care for cat is just as important as health care is to humans. You will need to be observant to your pet as they go about their daily routines. By doing this you may help live a longer and more healthlier life. The topics this article will cover are:

Administering medication
Common ailments in cats
Reaction to a vaccine
Pet care after surgery
Vomiting frequently

Administering Medication To Your Cat

This can be difficult especially if you don’t know how. So, let’s make this chore a lot easier for you. It will be difficult to deceive your cat because most pills cannot be hidden in a bite of cat food. Also, cats are curious and suspicious, so they will nose around any new food item.

The most effective way to do this is to place the cat on your lap with its back to you so that he cannot get away. Grasp the teeth of the upper jaw and tilt the head backwards gently. Hold the pill between your thumb and index finger of the other hand, use the other hand to gently pry the cats mouth open. Drop the tablet down the throat. You may need to give is a little push. While you are doing this, talk soothingly to your cat during the process and reward your cat when you are finished.

Your cat may not like this at first. Just remind yourself that you are doing this for her own good.

Common Ailments In Cats

This section will cover some common ailments found in cats. Cats can develop a variety of health conditions. Prevention is a huge part of staying healthy. Always watch for general signs of health conditions and contact your veterinarian when you notice a problem that is out of the ordinary. Call your veterinarian if your cat is weak, listless or refuses to take any liquids.

Cat Allergies

The most common allergy among cats is flea allergy. As they get older, they become more sensitive to flea bites. Food allergies can manifest themselves as dermatitis and severe itching, or vomiting and diarrhea. Look out for these signs.

Diarrhea

If your cat has persistent diarrhea for more then two days – take your cat to the veterinarian along with a stool sample.

Diabetes

Signs of diabetes may include excessive thirst and urination, loss of weight or obesity. Diabetic cats should remain indoors to avoid accidental feeding that could elevate their blood sugar.

Upper Respiratory Conditions

These conditions can manifest themselves in your cat by a cold or flu-like signs, such as a runny nose and sneezing combined with reddened or runny eyes. Be observant for these warning signs.

Reaction To A Vaccine

Your cat’s reaction to a vaccine shot is not uncommon. Keep an eye on your pet’s condition and behavior as you may observe symptoms such as pain, redness and swelling at the injection site, a low fever or loss of appetite. These are generally mild reactions and not a cause for alarm.

However, serious reactions are unusual. If your pet has a seizure, exhibits unrelenting vomiting or diarrhea, or shows signs of acute distress, take him to the veterinarian immediately. He could be having a severe allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock. Quick action by you may save your pets life.

Pet Care After Surgery

After your pet has an operation, you will need to keep an eye on him. Rest and relaxation will be what he needs. Keep your pet away from other pets while his incisions heal. Watch for signs of infection at the incision site – oozing, swelling and redness are warning signs.

After surgery pets are in a weakened state, and will be less able to feed themselves or resume normal bathroom habits. Cats should remain indoors for several weeks after surgery. Observe during this time if your cat’s appetite and activity level steadily improve, if not, contact your veterinarian.

Vomits Frequently

Cats normally cough up a hairball and hairballs and are not particularly dangerous to them. This can sometimes cover or mask other problems. When a cat vomits or coughs frequently, hairballs are usually to blame, when something else more serious might be happening. A vomiting cat may have eaten a coin, a button or tassel. If you suspect your cat swallowing something unusual, take him to the veterinarian for an x-ray. Take your cat in for a check-up if he should be sick to his stomach more than once a week, losing weight, or is vomiting food and not just saliva or an occasional hairball.

By being observant and watching for these signs, you can be ready and provide the best health care for your pet.

What can I do for my cat that is Vomiting and diarrhea?

My Siamese male cat has been very healthy and then all of a sudden he started vomiting and having diarrhea. Is there anything that I can do? If so what can I do? Please help if at all possible.
He is not running fever and he tried to drink some water. I fixed some home made pedialyte and I will give him some of that if I can get him to take some.

Answer
No one here can diagnose your cat remotely. Even a vet reading your question could not determine the cause of the problem without examining your cat and it is highly unlikely that there are any vets here and anyone saying they are a vet is likely lying.

Any “diagnosis” you get here will be no better than a guess.

Your cat needs to be examined by a vet.

A basic vet office visit exam should cost between $35 and $55 dollars. That is not much for the type of exam it will buy you.

The vet should do a full exam of the cat, nose to tail, and look at any specific problems.

You can tell the vet not do anything that will add to the bill without your prior approval.

Do a Google search on :
“low cost” vet cats city state

Put the words low cost in double quotes as I show them and replace city and state with your city and state.

You may find some low cost vets in your area.

Check with the Humane Society, the ASPCA (RSPCA if you are in the UK), and the APA (Animal Protective Association) and see what they charge for a basic exam.

There is a charitable vet service in the UK called PDSA, here is their eligibility page http://www.pdsa.org.uk/eligibility.html

Sad as it may seem to the Feline Image Association of America (yes, I made that up…) cats and fleas have been seen together! How can cats get the advantage? Flea control for cats may be the answer! So why, when it comes to flea control products for cats, does it seem like our furry felines always get the short end of the stick?

Even though cats seem to groom themselves religiously, they still get fleas on their adventures through the out of doors. They need a flea control product that is safe for their sensitive skin, and also safe in light of their grooming behaviors. That’s where many people succeed with a quality, veterinarian-approved flea control product such as Frontline for cats, Advantage flea control for cats, or another flea killer designed for cats’ sensitive skin.

Which product is best? It’s hard to say.

For example, both Frontline and Advantage for cats stop the biting of fleas in 3-5 minutes (by paralyzing them) and kill 98-100% of adult fleas within 12-24 hours. These products are stored in the cats’ skin and continuously reapply themselves onto the cat’s hair, staying effective for a month. The continuous monthly application of a product like Frontline Plus for cats, or Advantage flea drops will help break the flea life cycle, as eventually no adults will be left to reproduce.

However, by the time you spot fleas, it’s likely that the adults have already had the opportunity to lay eggs, which drop off your cat and into your carpet or yard. These can stay viable for up to two years before they hatch, so it’s important to keep up your flea control program with regular vacuuming to get fleas out of the carpet, and regular use of either Advantage flea control for cats or Frontline flea control products. Otherwise, even if they don’t pick up any new fleas from going outside, they can be re-infected by flea eggs already hiding in your house.

Both Frontline for cats and Advantage flea products are meant to be applied as a few liquid drops behind the back of the head and then they spread throughout the cat’s body. They will need to be reapplied every month, though. And, Frontline for cats and Advantage flea killer are both chemical pesticides, so it’s very important to read the instructions and follow them to the letter. Also, the first time you use the products, be on the lookout for side effects.

If you do notice side effects from your flea control product, I would suggest switching brands.

Fortunately for us, Frontline for cats, and Advantage flea control for cats, both have DIFFERENT active ingredients, so if your cat has sensitivities to one (or your fleas have immunities!) you can switch to the other and see if it is more effective for you.

She also loves two flea control products: Frontline For Cats and Advantage Flea Control for cats.

What are your thoughts on this medicine? Thanks!(:?

Sorry, if this is long. :S You don’t have to read all of it if you don’t want to.

Hey ya’ll. I have a 5 month Great Dane/Bullmastiff and I was thinking about switching her flea medicine to Comfortis. She has a small case of Flea Allergy Dermatitis and I have heard that this flea pill helps with this problem. Most of the reviews I have read on this particular medicine have been really good and supportive of the medicine. I have tried Frontline Plus and Advantage Multi and they did not work as well as I would have liked them too. The Advantage worked a little bit better, but she still had that constant itch and bald spots. I am taking her to the vet Saturday and will ask what he thinks, but I just wanted to get ya’lls opinion. So what do ya’ll think about this medicine?

Here is something I got from their website..

Comfortis™ is the first FDA-approved, chewable, beef-flavored tablet that kills fleas and prevents flea infestations on dogs for a full month.

Here are just a few of the features that set Comfortis™ apart from other flea products you may have used in the past:

-Beef-flavored, palatable, chewable tablet
-Easy to give with no mess
-Starts to kill fleas in 30 minutes
-Lasts a full month
-Kills fleas before they can lay eggs
-Approved by the FDA
-Demonstrated safe for dogs and puppies 14 weeks and older
-Spinosad, the active ingredient, is environmentally friendly
-With Comfortis™, you can play with your dog immediately after treatment.
-No need to isolate pets.
-Just treat and play.
-Because Comfortis™ is administered orally, there’s no risk of application site reactions.
-Comfortis™ won’t stain carpeting, upholstery or clothing.
-Comfortis™ can’t be rubbed or shaken off.

On viewpoints.com:

Comfortis has a rating of: 4.58 out of 5. Most of the reviewers being from FL, which is where I am from.

Frontline Plus has a rating of: 4.16 out of 5.

Advantage Multi has a rating of: 4.5 out of 5.

So all in all I guess they are about the same, but I just wanted to know your thoughts!(:

Thanks.. if you need any more information or something like that let me know!(:

Answer
Since advantage didn’t work on the fleas like you wanted, I would try it because it has a different active ingredient and might be more beneficial in killing the fleas. I have never tried it on my great dane personally but know a few people that have tried it and have had great success. I have not had any problems with advantage-multi yet but if I were to0, Comfortis would be the first flea product I would try.

Do you have a lot of questions regarding the health of your cat or dog? A lot of people end up being very concerned for their pets when they get sick or injured. The first place that most people go to look for information regarding pet health is on the internet. Although the internet is a great place to learn more about various types of diseases, injuries, and things that happen to pets, there is also a lot of misleading information. The reason that not all of the information available about pets online is 100% accurate is because it is not all written by professionals. The only real way to get your pet the proper care and evaluation is by visiting a veterinarian.

Veterinarians have the proper experience that is needed to find out what is wrong with your dogs and cats. Your first instinct when encountering in injury or sickness in your pet is to probably do a quick search to find out what could be wrong. Typing in symptoms and observations of your pet into a search engine is only going to give you generic results. There is absolutely no way for someone to pinpoint the problem with total accuracy by just typing your symptoms into a forum or question-answer form.

Most people care deeply for their pets, but in the moment, they are looking to save as much money as possible by looking online for symptoms and by making attempts to diagnose and treat their pets without visiting a vet. If you care deeply for your pet, the absolute best thing that you can do for your dog or cat is to take him/her immediately to the vet. As soon as you start having health concerns and/or sense that something could be wrong, it is important to pay a visit to the veterinarian.

The visit to the vet will help you save a ton of time and money. A common mistake that many pet owners make is attempting to treat their pets’ sickness with over-the-counter medications that are meant for humans.

A whole bunch of pet health questions on everything I need HELP with.?

I already made a post on my dogs teeth which is clear I need to take them to a vet to get them cleaned.
So on with the question starting from here.

Has anyone had a dog with no teeth? I fear that my oldest dogs teeth are beyond help. 90% sure.

IDK about you people but just to get a dogs teeth cleaned around my area is $300 to $600 for extractions.
I’m not made of money I will be dishing out a thousand or 2 for this.

How much should I feed my dachshunds? I have one fat 5 year female and one skinny old 10ish year male. Too fat too skinny. I don’t know what I should be doing now.

How do you know if your dog has warms? Does that make a dog stay skinny? What could?

I’m sure if I need to get a blood test for my dog its going to cost me an arm. I feel like I’m buying a used car.
I’m not sure what else I had but now I forgot.

Thanks for the help.
Thats $300 for normal cleaning. $600 for tooth extractions.
For my dog that has really bad teeth, can that cause pain the top half of his nose area. Ususally dogs use their nose a lot for everything even getting into a blanket. my eldest dog yipes if any kind of pressure is put on his nose area. Even a light blanket can hurt him. I’m still taking him to the vet. I hope if its just his teath that will fix the nose thing also.
My eldest dog can’t really bite anything…though sometimes he wants to play with a toy he can’t really bite it.

Answer
Ah quiet alot- Ill help you with what I can.
Sounds like he definately needs to get his teeth done, otherwise he is going to find it really hard to eat. The vet will be able to tell you how affective your dogs teeth will be.
Once the teeth have been cleaned you will have to probably change the diet a bit and give your dog/s food that will be good for the teeth and stimulating the gums. Such as chicken knecks and wings, chewing treats (the dog has to sit and chew to eat it), you can get lamb bones and marrow bones for the dog to chew on. If the dog has never had bones before probably stick to marrow bones from beeth, otherwise you could be looking at another exspensive vet bill. Dogs that arnt brought up on bones and are not to sure how to chew lamb bones generally swollow the splinters of the bone and cause lots of damage, marrow bone is fine for the dog though. Also add dog biscuits to the diet and if your dog is one for swollowing and not chewing biscuits see if you can find bigger dog biscuits which your dog does have to chew before swollowing.

A dog losing weight can mean they have worms, though it could mean other things too. If your dog scratches there bottom on the ground that could be a very good sign of worms. You can a fairly cheap worm tablet from your vet, if you worm them you should worm every animal in the family. As worms can be passed on so easy- so it prevents spreading. You can make your dogs a very nutritist meal with rice and dog mince with vedgies if wanted. A good thing to add to this meal while cooking is some garlic 1 tsp or 2, this is really good for intestional worms, I do reccomend a worm tablet first though if your dogs have not been wormed for a while.

On the biscuit packets it will have detail on the back of how much you should feed your dog it will ask if its a small, medium or large size and also ask what age group it is in. From this you can determine what you should be feeding them. These reccommendations are based on just a biscuit diet so you can give a little less if you want to add any of the extra things I suggested above. Dogs love a variety of foods. You only need to feed the dogs once a day and make sure they have plenty of water. When they are puppys though, they do need more than one meal a day- though after 1 year they are fine on one meal a day.

If you follow that with a little walk each day, you should have very happy healthy dogs, with out many vet problems. Fix up the teeth otherwise it will lead to more health problems and more money. So get it done now before it does get any worse.
Hope that helps

Cat Allergies: Cats, like humans, can suffer from a wide range of allergies. The most common allergy among cats is flea allergy. As cats get older, their sensitivity to flea bites increases. Food allergies account for another 5-10% of cat allergies. Food allergies might manifest themselves as dermatitis and severe itching, or vomiting and diarrhea, but may take up to 10 years to show up.

Vomiting: Some cats vomit all the time, while others rarely do. One of the most common reasons for vomiting is hairballs. All cats benefit from regular brushing to help minimize shedding and ingestion of hair. To check to see if your cat has vomited as a result of hairballs, examine the vomit carefully for small grayish pellets or lumps, regardless of your cat’s hair color. Hairballs can occur even with shorthair cats. Another reason for vomiting might be that your cat is allergic to its food. Try switching to another brand with substantially different ingredients and no food colorings to see if that helps. Sometimes cats vomit when they have worms. Consult your vet for a worming appointment. Periodic throwing-up can also be a sign of an overactive thyroid or kidney infection. This is particularly common in older cats. Your vet can do a blood test to find out about either. You know your cat’s habits. If it vomits more than usual or in some way demonstrates a departure from its normal habits, take it to the vet. The main thing is to give it plenty of fluids so it does not become dehydrated.

Diarrhea: If your cat has persistent diarrhea, you can try changing its diet. You can try boiled rice, cottage cheese, bread, plain yogurt, boiled chicken, chicken broth or strained meat. Choose the ones your cat prefers. If symptoms continue for more than two days, take your cat to the vet with a stool sample. You should also call your vet immediately if your kitten is weak or listless, or refuses to take fluids.

Feline Urinary Syndrome: (FUS) Feline urinary syndrome, or FUS, is an inflammation, irritation, and/or obstruction of the lower urinary tract. The inability to pass urine can become a life and death situation if not treated quickly. FUS is far more common among male cats than females. Your cat might have FUS if it strains to urinate, has blood in the urine, makes frequent trips to the litter box with only small amounts voided, or forgets how to use the litterbox.

Diabetes: Diabetes occurs in cats who cannot properly regulate their blood sugar level. Symptoms may include excessive thirst and urination; loss of weight or obesity. Older cats are more likely to develop diabetes than younger ones. Diabetic cats should be kept indoors to prevent accidental feeding that could elevate its blood sugar.

Feline Immunodeficiency Virus: (FIV) Though this disease is related to HIV, it is NOT possible to contract AIDS from a cat with FIV. FIV is passed through open wounds such as cat bites, resulting in an impaired immune system. As there is currently no vaccine for this disease, FIV-positive cats should be kept inside and away from other cats.

Upper Respiratory Disease Upper respiratory disease will manifest itself in your cat by cold or flu-like symptoms, like a runny nose and sneezing combined with reddened, runny eyes.

Feline Herpes Virus: Don’t worry, you can’t get herpes from your cat! FHV affects only cats.

Chlamydia Psittaci: Chlamydia is a bacteria-like organism that inhabits the tissues around the eyes. The most common symptom is conjunctivitis, which is generally seen in one eye at first, then spreads to both eyes.

Should I take my cat off amoxicillin due to vomiting?

My cat has been on liquid amoxicillin for three days and today she has been vomiting non stop. Most websites I’ve read say cats might vomit right after taking meds, but my cat is vomiting hours after being dosed. Should I take her off the meds now or wait until I talk to the vet Monday? I’m worried about missing doses, but I’m also worried that she isn’t keeping any food down. I did make sure she’d had some food before I gave meds.

Answer
This is really a question for the vet who can talk with you about the details of your cat’s condition and knows the reason she is on the amoxi. So I agree call and listen to their whole recording, they might give an emergency number. otherwise look for an emergency vet and tell them about it and see if they have any suggestion.

If for some reason you cannot talk to a vet and the cat can’t keep food down while on the amoxi, I personally would stop it for now because it is dangerous for a cat not to eat for days. Then on Monday maybe the vet can give you some anti nausea medicine or try a different AB that might also be effective for her problem but maybe will not make her so nauseated.
