Like any other responsible pet owner, you should know what health problems may hit your pet cat. Cats may appear very quiet and resilient, but they are a target of many viruses, bacteria and parasites that may affect the health of your beloved pet. Pet owners should be familiar with common cat health problems so that they won’t escalate into something worse. Prevention and early treatment is key to preserving the health and life of your cat.

Here are some common sicknesses that your feline may encounter in its lifetime.

1. Cat cold

Colds are not for humans only, but it is also one of the common cat health problems. Your cat may still be active and normal even when it has the sniffles. If this is the case, then you shouldn’t be worried. But if the cold affects your cat adversely, then you should bring it to the veterinarian. Some symptoms of a bad cold include loss of appetite, inactivity and murky discharges from the nose and/or the eyes. Always remember never to give your cats medicine designed for humans as they might worsen their condition, or worse, lead to their death.

2. Feline Urological Syndrome (FUS)

FUS, or the Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD) is one of the most common cat health problems that owners encounter with their cats. One of the symptoms of the disease that is easy to spot is the appearance of sand-like particles in the urine of your cat. Sometimes, the sand takes the appearance of stones, which can deal your cat great discomfort and pain. Leaving this untreated could mean your cat’s death.

As an owner, you could prevent this from happening by monitoring your feline’s diet. You should keep the cat’s magnesium levels low and ensure that it gets the proper amount of water to lessen its bladder retention time. The acidity of the cat’s urine should be also considered, as it should be kept acidic. Veterinarians say that feeding cats canned food is less likely to create kidney problems than dry food. Always make sure that there is a suitable area for cats to do their business inside the home especially in cold weather. Cats tend to hold in their urine in the cold, so exposing them to a place to do their business inside the warm house could help them take out their wastes properly, thus avoiding disease.

3. Wounds

Cats are active animals, and it can’t be helped if they get scratches and wounds. They have sharp claws and teeth that may injure other cats and themselves as well.

The most prominent problem that could present itself in this scenario is infections. Various cat health problems arise from an infected wound, and if left untreated could mean your cat losing a limb, or its life. If you notice a gash or a wound, clean it immediately with water and soap, then apply an antiseptic like iodine and cover it up with gauze to prevent the cat from licking it and ingesting the antiseptic. This is the first step of the prevention of a bigger infection problem.

If the wound is deep and an abscess forms, allow it to drain naturally. The cat may feel weak as the abscess forms, and usually feels a lot better once it drains naturally. But the abscess may recur, and so it is wise to bring the cat to the vet and allow them to drain the pus from the abscess surgically.

What’s wrong with waiting before taking your cat to the vet, it’s not like cats get free health care?

Well, my cat get about as much health care as most Americans, is that wrong. I mean morally wrong, in a Jesusy way.

Answer
The Bible is not exactly talking about cats. But it is clear on cruelty to animals.
Proverbs 12:10 tells us, “A righteous man cares for the needs of his animal, but the kindest acts of the wicked are cruel.”

In addition, livestock were also allowed to eat as they worked (Deuteronomy 25:4). Finally, God says to us in Proverbs 27:23: “Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds.”
_____________
Domestic Animals: Throughout the Bible, God shows how He expects us to care for our animals in practical ways. In the Law of the Israelites, for example, one of the purposes of the Sabbath year of rest for the land, was to let the land lie fallow–and so that the poor as well as livestock and wild animals could eat from it (Exodus 23:11 and Leviticus 25:7).

The Sabbath day itself was not only for humans to rest. God also commanded us to give our animals rest on the same day. (Exodus 20:10).

He also commanded the Israelites to help both their friends and enemies when their ox or donkey had fallen over, or was carrying a burden too heavy for it to bear (Exodus 23:5 and Deuteronomy 22:4).

Health care for cat is just as important as health care is to humans. You will need to be observant to your pet as they go about their daily routines. By doing this you may help live a longer and more healthlier life. The topics this article will cover are:

Administering medication
Common ailments in cats
Reaction to a vaccine
Pet care after surgery
Vomiting frequently

Administering Medication To Your Cat

This can be difficult especially if you don’t know how. So, let’s make this chore a lot easier for you. It will be difficult to deceive your cat because most pills cannot be hidden in a bite of cat food. Also, cats are curious and suspicious, so they will nose around any new food item.

The most effective way to do this is to place the cat on your lap with its back to you so that he cannot get away. Grasp the teeth of the upper jaw and tilt the head backwards gently. Hold the pill between your thumb and index finger of the other hand, use the other hand to gently pry the cats mouth open. Drop the tablet down the throat. You may need to give is a little push. While you are doing this, talk soothingly to your cat during the process and reward your cat when you are finished.

Your cat may not like this at first. Just remind yourself that you are doing this for her own good.

Common Ailments In Cats

This section will cover some common ailments found in cats. Cats can develop a variety of health conditions. Prevention is a huge part of staying healthy. Always watch for general signs of health conditions and contact your veterinarian when you notice a problem that is out of the ordinary. Call your veterinarian if your cat is weak, listless or refuses to take any liquids.

Cat Allergies

The most common allergy among cats is flea allergy. As they get older, they become more sensitive to flea bites. Food allergies can manifest themselves as dermatitis and severe itching, or vomiting and diarrhea. Look out for these signs.

Diarrhea

If your cat has persistent diarrhea for more then two days – take your cat to the veterinarian along with a stool sample.

Diabetes

Signs of diabetes may include excessive thirst and urination, loss of weight or obesity. Diabetic cats should remain indoors to avoid accidental feeding that could elevate their blood sugar.

Upper Respiratory Conditions

These conditions can manifest themselves in your cat by a cold or flu-like signs, such as a runny nose and sneezing combined with reddened or runny eyes. Be observant for these warning signs.

Reaction To A Vaccine

Your cat’s reaction to a vaccine shot is not uncommon. Keep an eye on your pet’s condition and behavior as you may observe symptoms such as pain, redness and swelling at the injection site, a low fever or loss of appetite. These are generally mild reactions and not a cause for alarm.

However, serious reactions are unusual. If your pet has a seizure, exhibits unrelenting vomiting or diarrhea, or shows signs of acute distress, take him to the veterinarian immediately. He could be having a severe allergic reaction called anaphylactic shock. Quick action by you may save your pets life.

Pet Care After Surgery

After your pet has an operation, you will need to keep an eye on him. Rest and relaxation will be what he needs. Keep your pet away from other pets while his incisions heal. Watch for signs of infection at the incision site – oozing, swelling and redness are warning signs.

After surgery pets are in a weakened state, and will be less able to feed themselves or resume normal bathroom habits. Cats should remain indoors for several weeks after surgery. Observe during this time if your cat’s appetite and activity level steadily improve, if not, contact your veterinarian.

Vomits Frequently

Cats normally cough up a hairball and hairballs and are not particularly dangerous to them. This can sometimes cover or mask other problems. When a cat vomits or coughs frequently, hairballs are usually to blame, when something else more serious might be happening. A vomiting cat may have eaten a coin, a button or tassel. If you suspect your cat swallowing something unusual, take him to the veterinarian for an x-ray. Take your cat in for a check-up if he should be sick to his stomach more than once a week, losing weight, or is vomiting food and not just saliva or an occasional hairball.

By being observant and watching for these signs, you can be ready and provide the best health care for your pet.

What can I do for my cat that is Vomiting and diarrhea?

My Siamese male cat has been very healthy and then all of a sudden he started vomiting and having diarrhea. Is there anything that I can do? If so what can I do? Please help if at all possible.
He is not running fever and he tried to drink some water. I fixed some home made pedialyte and I will give him some of that if I can get him to take some.

Answer
No one here can diagnose your cat remotely. Even a vet reading your question could not determine the cause of the problem without examining your cat and it is highly unlikely that there are any vets here and anyone saying they are a vet is likely lying.

Any “diagnosis” you get here will be no better than a guess.

Your cat needs to be examined by a vet.

A basic vet office visit exam should cost between $35 and $55 dollars. That is not much for the type of exam it will buy you.

The vet should do a full exam of the cat, nose to tail, and look at any specific problems.

You can tell the vet not do anything that will add to the bill without your prior approval.

Do a Google search on :
“low cost” vet cats city state

Put the words low cost in double quotes as I show them and replace city and state with your city and state.

You may find some low cost vets in your area.

Check with the Humane Society, the ASPCA (RSPCA if you are in the UK), and the APA (Animal Protective Association) and see what they charge for a basic exam.

There is a charitable vet service in the UK called PDSA, here is their eligibility page http://www.pdsa.org.uk/eligibility.html

Why is cat pet training so important? Cats are wondrous, wonderful creatures, and are filled with curiosity. They can be snuggly, affectionate and friendly creatures; often content to nap on a human lap and be stroked until their fur glistens. Some are more standoffish and will only allow the occasional solemn head pat before regally stalking off to stretch and preen in the sunshine. And others are just way out there wild cats, hell bent on running straight up the walls in pursuit of invisible prey, knocking down all who dare get in their pathway. While you cannot change the basic nature of the cat that you have in your home, you can change some of his more obnoxious behavior with cat pet training.

Your first cat pet training tip should be to understand why they do some of the things that they do. Some cat behavior is out of boredom, some out of transitional changes as they grow out of kitten stages into adulthood, and some can be a symptom of impending or ongoing illnesses. Knowing which is which can help you to avoid potentially dangerous problems before they become life threatening.

Once you have a basic understanding of the why of cat behavior, you can start working on the things that he will need to change with cat pet training. Make sure that you have a list of the poor behavior, and start with the worst offender first. Try to teach new behaviors one at a time, because too many changes will make the cat confused and potentially worst behaved than before. If a cat is doing something that is possibly dangerous that problem should be addressed first with cat pet training, otherwise, it is at your own discretion.

Remember that cat pet training is a matter of patience triumphing over frustration. Shouting at a cat does not work at all, and in fact will bring up a whole new set of issues. Timid cats will become even more fearful, and aggressive cats may take your shouting as an actual threat, so remember that a startled cat will not always react with James Bond coolness- sometimes they bite.

Do not bother with reprimanding your cat, as it is often an ineffective maneuver as well in cat pet training. Cats will learn that getting caught doing the targeted behavior brings about some horrible reactions, so they will simply learn to hide better. This is seen frequently with toileting issues. A cat will stop using his litter box for a variety of reasons, including illness, so that you must find out why. Finding kitty messes after the fact is a pain, but it will not do you any good to drag the offending furball over to the spot, show it to him and then take him to the litter box. Unless he is a brand new cat or you have moved homes recently, he knows full well where that litter box was, he just did not use it.

Find out why and the behavior should be stopped with cat pet training. Eliminate all causes, including sickness, and then work from there. Some cats will never use a litter box, but will allow themselves to be trained to use an alternative. Bizet, the big fluffy cat is too big for the litter box, but he does scratch at the door when he needs to go. He is a psycho the majority of the time, but for this one, he deserves a good kitty!

Answer
Yes, puppies can have worms and no symptoms. Also, it takes more than one worming to get rid of the worms.
I see no problem with waiting until Friday, since your pup isn’t showing any signs or distress.

The number of obese cats is increasing at a fast rate. An obese cat is far more likely to suffer from health problems than a cat that’s a healthy weight. This article lists the main health problems that obese cats face, and tells you how you can check if your cat is overweight.

Some of the most common cat health problems that obese cats face are:

Cardiac problems:
The strain on the heart and clogging up of the blood vessels can cause heart failure or a heart attack.

Lung problems:
Extra fat on the chest prevents proper lung expansion, so the cat gets out of breath easily. Lung
infections such as bronchitis are more likely to develop.

Skeletal problems:
The extra weight the cat’s skeleton has to carry takes its toll. Stiff joints, back problems and arthritis may eventually develop.

Diabetes:
The cat’s body can’t cope with all the excessive food, so its blood sugar rises. If this can’t be controlled, it may need insulin injections.

Liver problems:
Deposits of fat on the cat’s liver can cause liver failure to develop.

Urine problems:
Urinary tract infection is more likely to occur in an obese cat than a healthy one, because an obese cat can’t keep his butt clean by washing it – because he can’t reach it.

Weakened immune system:
Obese cats are less able to fight off infections than their healthy counterparts.

In addition, giving anesthetics to obese cats is much more risky than with healthy weight cats. Diagnosis of illnesses is more difficult because the extra fat hinders the vet’s examination.

What does all this mean for an obese cat? A reduced quality of life and a shortened life expectancy. For the owner, amongst other things, it means considerably higher vet’s bills.

If you think your cat may be overweight but you’re unsure, look at him from above. You should be able to see a waistline below his ribs. If he’s long haired, you may not be able to see it, but you should be able to feel it. Also, you should be able to feel his ribs.

If your cat is overweight, it’s in his and your interests to get him back to a healthy size. You should visit your vet in the first instance, who will advise you on the best diet and feeding regime for him.

If unsure of giardia diagnosis, can I still treat my cat with metronidazole?

I posted earlier about my cats, and chronic diarrhea (which has been happening for nearly two weeks now.) First, it was my younger kitten, and now it is my older kitten; they both are having uncontrollable diarrhea. I am a Peace Corps volunteer; therefore, I live in an underdeveloped location and do not have vet care available. So, I am resorting to human medication from a pharmacy. All internet research and discussions with vets online over the past couple weeks have pointed to giardia, and based on the fact that I (stupidly) have been giving my cats tap water (lesson learned!), I think that is a high possibility. My question is: I just bought metronidazole. Can I give a very tiny amount to the kitties, despite the fact that I am not 100% sure it is giardia? Also, how long should I give them the medication? Thanks so much for any help/advice!

Answer
Given that you’re in a third world country, it certainly sounds like giardia. And metro is the drug of choice to treat that. It also works on other similar intestinal parasites, but not on coccidia. If they have tan, *really really* smelly diarrhea, then it’s probably coccidia. If it’s “just” liquid diarrhea, then probably giardia. Metro is metro – there is no special cat metro, it’s the human drug compounded to the proper dosage based on the weight of the cat. Cats are dosed at 10-25 mg/kg, twice a day for 5 days. The pharmacy you got it from should be able to help you with the ‘compounding’ – it tastes really bad, and the powdered pill can be mixed (one dose at a time) in something strong tasting, like the oil from oil-packed tuna. For the youngest of the kittens, I’d go with the lower dosage. Also effective – and safer – is panacur, which you may be able to find as it’s a livestock wormer. They would get .1 ml per pound of that twice a day for 7-10 days. It’s more palatable than the metro, and safer in the youngest ones.

The other thing you must do is eliminate their exposure to the spores. This means keeping them indoors, and away from any contaminated water. Change their litter boxes daily, and scoop out the feces as soon as you can. Clean the litter boxes with bleach daily. That will speed up their recovery, as they won’t be ingesting new spores from it.

Good luck!

Does your cat have a kidney problem? Then you are not only going to need to learn more cat information in general so that you can comprehend the animal better but as well you are going to need to produce a proper feline kidney diet.

Changing to a feline kidney diet will help in a number of ways; it is going to make certain that your cat is receiving all the nutrition they require to strive. A feline kidney diet needs to include special vitamins and minerals than you do not generally get in a regular feline diet because there are kidney problems.

Where to begin

To understand what is going to help your cat and what dietary changes it will require you need to understand the cat. Cats are naturally carnivores, and the greatest way to formulate a feline kidney diet plan is to make sure to comprise foods that the cats would eat out in the wild, as this is where they initially come from.

The next step is where it gets tough. You are going to need to understand how to read a pet food ingredient label, so you can make sure that you are selecting the correct food for your cat. The current labeling system for pet foods is gravely deficient in functional information and looking at the list of ingredients will tend to give an imperfect picture of what is in fact in the food in terms of the quantity of each ingredient.

Even though you may have heard different, the majority if not all of the so-called prescription diets that are sold in veterinary hospitals are not formulated for most favorable health of a carnivore. A lot of of these products include corn, wheat and soy which really have no logical place in a cat’s diet even though most people incorrectly think this because this is believed by so many people.

Diet is the brick and mortar of health, and so if you want your cat to live a long healthy life, you are going to need to make sure that they are eating all the right foods. Not only do you need to provide them with a proper feline kidney diet but as well make sure that they are drinking enough water and getting enough exercise.

You will want to do as a great deal investigation of your own, so that you can find out more about cats in general and as well about your cat in particular, what their health problems are and what you can do to obtain care of them and get them to a most favorable condition of health.

Feline AIDS (FIV)…. Vet waiting for call!?

My cat started losing weight a year or two ago and he was diagnosed with an overactive thyroid. He never really gained the weight back and I did worry about his health some but we were doing all we could. He’s been on pills for that. Two days ago, when he got up, he was making weird sounds and attempting to throw up, but without doing so. I called the vet but also thought he was coughing up a furball.

The vet did a blood test and he has feline AIDS, or FIV. He is critical now; it is apparently in an advanced stage. He does look to be in discomfort and very lethargic and such. Can anyone tell me something about this such as… Well, the vet said I could bring him home on pain medication if I wanted. They are waiting for me to call and say what to do. I don’t want the cat to suffer but I also don’t want to euthanize him if he could maybe recover enough to live happy for awhile.

Does anyone have experience with this disease? What should I do? I said I would call within an hour or so. Thanks.

P.S. This cat is the only reason I have to live at all. There is NOTHING else good in my life. The only reason I ever get up at all is because I know he will be around.

Answer
i know exactly what you are going through, my 14 year old car has feline aids too, has had it since he was 3 years old. i have had him since he was 1 hour old, his mom wouldn’t care for him and he was hand raised. when he was 3 he got a fever, lost weight and looked like hell, we live on a farm and he was an indoor/outdoor cat and had sometime gotten into a fight with a male cat with aids. i have 3 other house cats- none have every caught aids from Carlyle. when they diagnosed him, the vet acted like i was an idiot to save him, he was very weak and very skinny. I cooked him chicken breast and feed him broth and chicken, tuna, deli meat- anything that he would eat- even yogurt and icecream, alot of times it was a fight to see who would win- many tiny meals many times a day. don’t give up as long as he tries- my cat also has kidney failure along with his aids, we visit the vet maybe 1 time a year. he is on NO medication, only special food for his kidneys. he eats WHATEVER he wants he is happy and healthy and weighs between 11-13 lbs- at his worst he weighed 6.5 lbs they told me many times i should put in to sleep- what do they know, if he has the will he will pull through it takes you and him working together!! have hope!

If he gets the proper vaccinations when he is essential to get them, he really should be protected towards numerous pests and illnesses. Taking the proper methods with your cat now will avoid something from taking place in the potential.

Cats and dogs are the most adaptable pets. People love to keep and care these small creatures. However, before bringing a new cat or dog, it’s better to buy some necessary items that may give convenience not only to your pet but you will also feel it easy while caring your pet.

If we talk about various cat supplies, we will see that ceramic and stainless steel is preferable as compared to plastics. A collar is a better option for a cat. These are also good supplies for dogs. A little snoopy or kennel is also required to provide comfortable sleep to your pet. However, mostly older cats prefer to sleep on orthopedic bedding. Cats and dogs just behave like small human kids in many ways. They need toys to play. So, pet toys that may include balls and wand-type toys are necessary. These will help to maintain the health of your pet by proper exercise. Some kitten and puppies also require chew toys. As a whole, we can say that keeping a pet is not an easy deal. It is necessary to furnish its home with all items required. So, that it may grow smoothly. Pet supplies are also available in whole sales markets at affordable rates.

Pet owners should keep this fact in mind that their pet must be a groomed animal with maintained health, discipline and entertainment needed. All this is only possible if you give proper attention and care to our pet. Moreover, if the cat is so sensitive, there are many flea control products available in cat supplies.
If you want to ensure longer and healthier life to your pet cat, it is important to feed, bath and groom it properly. There are some tips in this regard,

If your cat needs a bath, place a washable cloth or rug in bathing area. Now, hold your cat on arms otherwise it may slip. Lather it quickly. Place some drops of mineral oil in it’s eyes to prevent irritation because of soap. Water should not be too hot or too cold otherwise it may harm the cat. Wash head, neck, ear and body properly. After bath, keep your cat inside otherwise it may develop cold.

While feeding your cat, it’s not better option to offer bones because these may catch in throat. There are many food items available as cat supplies in the market. Some dry items can be stored easily. It is better to refrigerate moist food items otherwise they may rot easily.

Groom you cat with proper trimming of the fur and comb the fur also rather your cat has long hair or short. if it has long nails cut with the help of special clipper available in the market at cat supplies stores.

Before you get a kitten, you should be prepared for the responsibility that you are taking on. A kitten is not disposable you cannot just get rid of it if the cat becomes a problem on your lifestyle. You are responsible for caring of your cat for its entire life. No cat is perfect they will all have accidents on your carpet till they learn how to use the litter pan and claw on your favorite sofa or chair if left unattended.

It is your responsibility to watch the cat and to properly train him or her. There is no Bad Cats, but there are inexperienced pet owners that fail their pet by not properly training there cat. The cat or kitten should not be penalized for your lacking the skills. If you are not an experienced pet owner, you should talk to cat owners so you can learn what is needed, and you can learn how to teach. Pets can not learn everything they need to know in just one day training your pet is a constant process, and it is your responsibility.

You will also need to figure out just where you are going to get your cat from. If you have made the decision and you are set on getting a purebred kitten, you should check out a good breeder. They also do health checks on their kittens before they are bred them. These health checks test for problems that may affect their kittens. You may want to go to a purebred cat rescue group of your breed of cat. Note: Rescue cats or even kittens are not bad cats. They are kittens that were purchased by irresponsible owners who had no idea and did not understand the kind of responsibility they were taking on.

Some of the kittens were neglected; mistreated, or turned over to the rescue group because of their owners moving, having children, etc. Rescue groups evaluate each cat carefully and make sure they are suitable to be with you and your lifestyle. A rescue group will not let you adopt a kitten from them unless they feel you are a right match with the cat. When you get a Rescue cat they will already be spayed or neutered when you get them, and have up to date shots.

You can also get your cat from your local shelter. Getting a cat or a kitten from a shelter is very similar to getting one from a rescue group. They will already be spayed or neutered or you will receive a coupon to get it done for free. They will be up to date on their shots.

A Backyard Breeder is someone who breeds their pets that have not even had health screens to check for problems that some breeds have, and there kittens are not titled (registered) in anything. With a cat from this type of breeder, typically you will run into health problems during your kitten’s life, and you may also have a temper issues as well. Sure these kittens may be cheaper to purchase, but trust me on this one you will be paying more in the long run. A pet store is the absolute worst place you can get a pet. If you are at all sensitive about mistreatment of animals, please do not read any further.

Some pet shops get their kittens through a pet mill. A pet mill is a facility that keeps their cats in small cages 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The cats are left to lie in their own feces; they are fed cheaply mixed in dry cat food. They are bred every time she comes into season and they receive little if any vet care during their lives whatsoever. When the female cats are no longer able to breed they are beaten to death or even drown. Purchasing a pet from an out of way pet shop keeps this process going. If we can all stop buying kittens from these shops, they will no longer supply them.

Will a cat that has had kittens care for a kitten that isnt it’s own?

I got a new kitten recently and seems to be accepted by my 1 year old cat that has had kittens. When the kitten plays with the older cat, it bites its ears and attacks it. But my 1 year old cat doesn’t do anything, occasionally it will nip at it but that’s it? Could my cat think that this kitten is it’s own?
I love the way it just dosen’t care when it attacks it, so cute.

Answer
Yes, well it does depend on the cat. When the mother cat nips at the other cat it is just disciplining it. That is ok. She seems to be accepting it well.

Cats have a dry skin just like humans. The fur on their body protects them from exposure to elements such as dirt. For pet cats that have dry skin, it is advisable to use moisturizing or soap-free products. Cats normally develop skin problems such as Seborrhea. The best way to treat this disorder is to use medicated shampoo.

Sensory Organs:

Cats have the great qualities. They are better than human beings in seeing things and hearing sounds around them. They smell and feel the nature very well. Due to these abilities, cats were often mistaken to possess black magic. The current era does not suspect cats of having an influence over the supernatural powers. It is necessary to know cats’ sense, which may help in understanding their behavior much better.

1. Sight: Cats have a good night vision. Where there is no enough light, cats see much better than humans. However, they are not able see in complete darkness. This ability comes at the cost of daytime vision, which is beneficial for nocturnal predators. Actually, cats fail to see distant objects at daytime. People know little about the colors that cats see visibly. Science says that, they can identify some of the colors than humans do. With their eyes, cats detect faster movement of things in their surroundings. On the other hand, it is hard for them to pay attention on slow moving objects.

2. Sound: Cats have very sharp ears. Even when fast asleep, cats trace the noisy sounds of small rodents. Their ability to hear sounds is three times as high as that of human beings. Cats move their large ears sideways to capture the sound more accurately. For this, they first locate the place from where the sound actually comes. While chasing the target, they sometimes pause to listen and determine the location of their prey.

3. Smell: Cats largely depend on their sense of smell. They always sniff their food before eating. Smelling things is the essential part of feline communication. There is a mechanism at the top of their mouth, which makes possible for them to analyze smell. With the help of this mechanism, cats twist their lips, open their mouth, and express disgust over certain things.

4. Taste: Cats use this sense to decide the foods good for them. They are truly carnivores. As such, their sense of taste best lies in recognizing fat and protein. Unlike dogs, cats prefer to stay away from sweets. In addition, cats do not respond well to the taste of salt. Experts suggest the reason behind this as, cats get enough salt from the meat food.

5. Touch: Cats have touch receptors all over their body. These receptors are nerve cells that transfer sensations of pain, pressure and temperature from any point to the brain. The nerve cells are concentrated mainly on their front paws and face. The hair, covering body of cats, help them to stay alert even on the slightest touch of air passing by.

Taking care of a cat after being neutered?

I’ll be taking care of my neighbor’s male cat who was neutered yesterday. She told me her vet said he had to stay inside for seven days. This doesn’t sound right to me. The cat loves to be outside. Is it best for him to stay inside?

Answer
yes, he should stay inside because he won’t feel well for a while. he also should have a super clean litterbox. every time he potties his box should be scooped out.

By being aware of how your cat is feeling and what it is doing, will help you to ensure that its health remains at its optimum level.

There are various different signs that can tell you when your cat is not feeling at its best or when you might need to take it to the vet for a check up.

For instance, if you find that your cat is vomiting, it is not necessarily a problem unless it appears to be apathetic and low on energy.

Cats will eat grass to induce vomiting, often to eliminate hair that they’ve ingested while grooming themselves.

If this is happening consistently then you might need to spend a little more time grooming your cat to remove the excess hair and stop them from swallowing it when they lick themselves.

Cold food can also cause your cat to vomit and it is not a good idea to take the cat food directly from the refrigerator and feed it to your pet.

Heat the food in a microwave for a few seconds before placing it on the cat’s plate and you might find that your cat has a lot less problems with their food.

If you find that your cat is scratching itself quite a lot then this can be a sign that they may need additional grooming to remove fleas or ticks.

You can often see flea dirt in the fur and even if you can’t find the fleas when grooming this is a sign that they are there and need to be eliminated.

There are various different treatments available for fleas, from pills to powders, and even collars that can be worn around their neck.

You need to be careful when putting a collar on a cat as they like to climb and the collars can get caught in branches and other things that could result in dire and life threatening circumstances.

Some of the flea treatments available in the market place today may also make your cat feel unwell for a day or two afterwards so look out for any signs or symptoms and use an alternative treatment the next time if you feel that it has been upsetting your cat.

Being aware of your cats needs is in your, and your cats, best interest.

How do you make a cat stop vomiting?

How do you make a cat, give or about 5 years old, stop vomiting? She spits up and chokes and throws up her food. How, without a trip to the vet, and LOW COST, can we help cure her? We’ve tried olive oil on her food, and that didn’t work. She is a petite cat, so we can’t use any harmful chemicals or medicine. We think she has hairballs, but she won’t eat that special food!! Please help! Thanks!

Answer
You need to find out why she is vomiting and correct that.

If she is not keeping food/water down, she runs a risk of becoming dehydrated which could be fatal.

She could have worms, if her parasite load is large enough that would cause her to vomit. She does, however, need medicine in order to be dewormed.

She could hairballs. Laxatone is a tuna flavored paste that you feed your cat. Most cat’s enjoy it and it helps the hair pass through the system.

She may be eating her food too fast. In this case you may need to change her food to something that she would be forced to eat slower. My sister’s cat always vomited up dry food but was fine with wet food (however she is fine with my dry food, so she may just have been intolerant to the one my sister tried to feed her). My boyfriends cat needed to be served the canned pate in order to not vomit.

If she swallowed anything that is causing the food to not pass through her system correctly, she will probably need to see a vet, get xrays, and possibly surgery because that could be fatal.

If she has a sickness that is causing her to vomit, you could wait for it to pass but she would probably need some type of antibiotics or other treatment.
