Diagnosed with a probable brain tumor… now what?

My beloved German Shorthaired Pointer service dog has been diagnosed with a probable brain tumor. She had a seizure the beginning of July that started when she fell off my bed. We don’t know if the seizure caused her to fall off the bed, or hitting her head on a metal trunk across from the bed started it. It lasted about 5 minutes, and I rushed her straight to the emergency vet clinic where they couldn’t find anything wrong.

A month later, I had her scheduled to have a rotten tooth pulled, so I went and had blood work done since she is 9 years old. The blood work came back normal, she did fine through her dental surgery, and everything seemed as though the original seizure was a one-time thing.

About a month later, I noticed her staggering down the hallway when I came out of the bathroom. Naturally this was after vet hours, and I didn’t see any point in dragging her all the way back to the emergency vet to have them tell me she was “normal” again, so I got her in the first available appointment the next Monday.

When the vet went to look in her right ear, Flecks acted like it was painful. This was not normal behavior for her. When the vet looked in her right eye, she said the nerves were not reacting to the light. When I asked if she thought this meant Flecks was blind, she said no. And I can wave my hand in front of her face and she can see movement out of both eyes. Unfortunately my vet has diagnosed a probable brain tumor. Without a CAT-scan or MRI (either of which would cost more than the car I own) we wouldn’t know for sure, but this is the vet’s best diagnosis.

She has now had 3 seizures, all about a month apart, and none of them as bad as the original one. I have retired her from being my mobility dog, and I’m in the process of training another one. The vet put her on phenobarbital, but she turned into a zombie, and it wasn’t making that much difference. I now just have valium for when she has an active seizure. The vet says I’ll know “it’s time” when she stops eating or her seizures get worse. For now, she seems fine, and I’m glad I was able to find a “pet friendly” apartment so I could take care of her now that she’s retired.

Here’s the bad part. When she’s gone, I’d like to be able to have her cremated and buried with my other dogs on my cousin’s farm, but living on a disability budget is going to make that a real financial strain. It was suggested that I donate her to the local veterinary teaching facility so that they could learn from her illness. I’m actually not opposed to that if it will help another dog in the future, but I can’t decide what to do about having her “with my other dogs”.

I guess I need suggestions on finding a way to put a “piece” of her (not literally) with the others so that they can all be together again.
Just to add, my cousin’s farm is in another state. It wouldn’t be practical to haul all of her to be buried, especially in the middle of February with 2 feet of snow on the ground. I don’t know when her time will come, I’m just looking for options… Would be nice if it was *years* from now.

I think it would be wonderful for you to donate her remains so that they can better treat other dogs in the future. I think that would be a very good thing to do.

I suggest that you bury her collar and tags if you would like to put a piece of her with your other dogs. Her collar and tags are something that were with her always, so that’s a pretty important thing to a lot of people. I agree with the other poster as well on maybe burying her favorite toy, or putting a plant in her spot.

Whatever you decide, know that it is your decision, and whatever it ends up being, you’re a good owner who cares greatly about her pets.

FRONTLINE Plus for Cats Flea And Tick Treatment

This is what i think..They keep the humans alive because it means they spend more time in the hospitals or medical systems….buying medications and using hospital or government programs.

It all comes down to money..they like to drain people of every last cent they have..but they don’t do that for animals.

When the arthritis has become severe, your dog may develop fever. Weight loss due to loss of appetite is also an indication that your pet is sick or is in distress.

Feline Diabetes, any relationship to the recent pet food recall?

Our 13 yr cat was experiencing most of the symptoms described for the pet food recall. A Vet visit showed an infection which was treated with an injection, but the vet says that wasn’t the cause of the symptoms. The vet ran some blood work and came back with Feline Diebetes. Now we stick the poor guy once a day with a needle to control his glucose levels.
From what I’ve read, the tainted recalled food effects the kidneys.
In regards to glucose levels, would the test results of a cat that ate the tainted food be the same for a diabetic cat?

Recently, we went to Petco to buy our children a pet parakeet, so naturally we left the store with a cat, too. Yes, just when our third child got out of diapers and our lives were starting to look and smell better, we had to screw it all up again. This time, the rationale was that the kids really needed to have an animal to ignore so they could be like all of their friends at school. Needless to say, we now have 7 heartbeats under our roof.

I realize it’s only a kitty (who’s already litter-trained!) and a birdie (the easiest, most odor-free and maintenance-free pet in the world), but somehow the house feels a little more crowded. In a good way. Kind of. I really understood the level of impact on my psyche hours after our new family members had arrived, when I was setting the table. I accidentally grabbed 7 plates instead of 5. No, we did not invite the animals to dinner, but its clear that these sweet beings, though they won’t need ski trips and a college fund, will set up shop in our hearts and on our To Do lists for the many years that they’re with us.

My children’s reactions, thus far, have made it all worth it. My two oldest have been shockingly responsible in keeping the cat out of the bird’s room (we have yet to install his ceiling hook), and keeping both the cat and him fed and with fresh water. Perhaps they are unimpressed with my caretaking abilities, so they have taken it upon themselves, but they have done more for their pets in a week than I did for mine between my 4th and 19th birthdays. RIP, Luli! And Tabby. And Hannah, Jell-o, Eddie, Bump, and Fridge.

Bonding has also been a cinch. My youngest child hurt herself doing something crazy (as usual) and instead of roaring the usual “I want my mommy,” through a flood of tears, she screamed, “I want my CAT!” That was almost worth enduring every scoop of dirty kitty litter of the past, present, and future. Later, my oldest told us at the dinner table, “I understand cat,” and then went on to translate her meows into English. I was impressed by her darling commitment to the delusion. A natural-born mum, indeed!

Another bonus of our recent impulse-adoption is that my husband finally has a son. In fact, he insisted upon it. Our bird is named Lance, and I pray he doesn’t turn out to be a girl, like the rest of us are. My husband finds tremendous solace in the fact that there is one more respiring male in the house.

The kitty is named Kelcie. That’s the name she came with, but the girls loved it, and since, coincidentally, that’s what they wanted to name our youngest daughter, I figure they should finally get to have their Kelcie.

The cat is now warming up to us, as is the bird who chirped for the first time after 5 days. I guess I need to find out why the caged bird really does sing since we’ve been successful in not inspiring poor Lance up until a few hours ago. Unfortunately, though, nature has waved its wicked wand over the Koenigin Kennel, and the fish, which we were fish-sitting for my mom, went belly up near the bottom of the bowl. My husband acted quickly, and gave him a proper burial in our sewage system. And to think that I didn’t even include him as number 8 in my erroneous count of diners the other night! Poor fish! The worst part of all this is that my mother, the fish’s mother, is reading about this from a cruise ship on the jewel-toned seas of Southeast Asia. Sorry, Mom. Does that make the fish my brother? My dearly departed brother.

So we are down one heartbeat, but up two, which is a good thing. The girls are having fun being pet mommies, and I am just praying that Kelcie will spare my new carpeting, and that Lance will find some redeeming value in us. Pets are so important, really, and they have already made such a huge impact on my children. Like my youngest keeps saying with the unmistakable glow of toddler pride in her eyes, “There’s a cat at MY house!”
