Piriton! If over the counter stuff doesn't make a difference, your doctor may be able to give you something that will.

Depends on what you need. Equine Mega Store in Australia is tops- and you don't need a prescription.

I've gotten products from this Australian company:
http://www.petshed.com/frontline-plus.asp
I can understand your concerns with the price being so expensive. You can get generic heartworm prevention meds from there as well. There may be cheaper places, but I've been satisfied with what I've gotten from here.

I just recently took my gerbil to the vet since he had in ear infection. they gave me medicine to feed him through a syringe --by mouth!--. the vet said i could also give it through his favorite soft food. i did applesauce. you could also try blending carrots with applesauce because my gerbil actually loves that lol! but anyways, yes you can feed it through ANY soft food. even peanut butter. don't forget to stir it up!
and also, not too much applesauce since they might not eat it all, then they don't get all the medicine. so only put in as much applesauce as you think will work

I think that it should be O.K. to use. If you are really unsure about it, you can phone your vet and ask them if it should be OK to do.
Good luck!
